The NFL season never ends—and I mean, it never ends. 

When the Super Bowl ends, you may think the NFL season is over—but you're wrong. The NFL Scouting Combine is right around the corner, then the NFL Draft, then offseason workouts, then, before you know it, we're back to square one with training camp. 

As the athletes train in Indianapolis, let's take a look at 25 interesting facts about the NFL Scouting Combine. 

So When Did the Scouting Combine Start?

The NFL Scouting Combine dates all the way back to 1982 when it was known as the National Football Scouting Inc. 

It was a much smaller event than it is today, as only the high-level prospects were invited. Today, all players projected to be drafted get the invite. 

Where Was the First NFL Scouting Combine Located?

The first ever scouting combine was located in sunny Tampa, Fla back in 1982.

Aside from specific position-oritented drills, there are 13 tests and evaluations conducted: 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, broad jump, 20-yard shuttle, three cone drill, 60-yard shuttle, interviews, physical measurements, injury evaluation, drug screen, the Cybex test and the Wonderlic test.

The Cybex test is a rather interesting evaluation that no one is really aware of. 

During the test, a player is hooked up to a special machine that evaluates joint movement. 

What Is the Wonderlic Test?

The Wonderlic Test is a cognitive ability test that is 12 minutes long and comprised of 50 questions. It is used to test learning skills and problem-solving skills. 

What Are the Average Scores on the Wonderlic Test?

According to Paul Zimmerman's novel, The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football, here are the average scores for each position from highest to lowest. 

Offensive tackle 26, center 25, quarterback 24, guard, 23, tight end 22, safety 19, linebacker 19, cornerback 18, fullback 17, wide receiver 17 and halfback 16. 

Has Anyone Ever Scored a Perfect Score on the Wonderlic Test?

Harvard's Pat McInally is the only player in NFL history to ever score a perfect 50 out of 50 on the Wonderlic Test. 

McInally played for the Cincinnati Bengals as a punter and a wide receiver.

Who Scored the Lowest Wonderlic Test Score in History?

Darren Davis never made it in the NFL, but he reportedly scored the lowest test grade on the Wonderlic Test in NFL history. 

According to the report, Davis scored a pitiful four. 

After Davis' stellar career at Iowa State, he went on to have a mediocre career in the Canadian Football League.

When you watch Johnson play, it's obvious that he's just a step ahead of everyone. He is just that fast. 

Who Set the NFL Scouting Combine Record for Most Bench Press Reps?

Eastern Kentucky's Justin Ernest set the NFL scouting combine record of 51 bench press reps of 225 lbs back in 1999.

Ernest played defensive tackle while at Eastern Kentucky, but never really panned out the NFL level.

Who Recorded the Highest Vertical Jump in NFL Scouting Combine History?

Gerald Sensabaugh recorded the highest vertical jump back in the 2005 NFL scouting combine, as he jumped an incredible 46 inches.

Sensabaugh now plays for the Dallas Cowboys as a safety and has recorded 14 career interceptions. 

Who Recorded the Longest Broad Jump in NFL Scouting Combine History?

Scott Starks out of Wisconsin jumped an NFL scouting combine record of 11'5" back in 2005, which is tied with former Oakland Raiders running back Justin Fargas. 

Starks was drafted in the third round of the 2005 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars and has played in 53 career games. 

Who Ran the Fastest 20-Yard Shuttle in NFL Scouting Combine History?

Iowa wide receiver Kevin Kasper recorded the fastest 20-yard shuttle time back in 2001, when he clocked in at an impressive 3.73 seconds.

Kasper was drafted in the sixth round back in '01 and bounced around the NFL for several years after being drafted by the Denver Broncos. 

What Is the 3-Cone Drill?

The three-cone drill is used to test the player's ability, quickness and movement when making a sharp cut. 

It's conducted with three cones that are placed five yards apart from each other forming a right angle. 

The total distance of this drill is 30 yards.

Wide receiver Jeff Mael out of Oregon set the NFL scouting combine during last year's combine, as he ran a blazing 6.42 seconds, which edged Buster Skrine of that same class by .02 seconds. 

Mael went undrafted, but spent this past season as a member of the Houston Texans practice squad.

The NFL Regional Scouting Combines are designed for players that are not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. These players can be college prospects or players that have never played in the NFL before. 

At these combines, these players will be drilled on the short shuttle, vertical jump, 40-yard dash, the three-cone drill as well as positional drills.
