Chicago Bulls: Rose Laboring for Gasol Will Cause More Harm Than Good

Haddon AndersonJun 7, 2018

There's no denying that a straight swap of Pau Gasol for Carlos Boozer would be delightful for the Chicago Bulls.

Even a deal that features Boozer and point guard C.J. Watson heading to the Los Angeles Lakers would be a wondrous thought.

Because of rumors that Derrick Rose desires Gasol's coming to Chicago, many fans are now yearning for Rose to labor all the more for the Bulls to actively pursue Gasol.

But there a bevy of factors to consider in this.

First of all, what did Derrick Rose really say?

Rumors splash through social media like a tsunami. Are we supposed to really believe Rose approached Chicago personnel and asked them to inquire about Gasol?

Sure, Rose maybe implied he wouldn't mind playing with the versatile big man, but I highly doubt his tone was overly aggressive.

If he hasn't lobbied the Bulls' management to pursue Dwight Howard, why would he advocate for the 31-year-old Gasol?

Secondly, the Lakers would never consider trading Gasol for Boozer and Watson. This point has been vividly made amid all these rumors, but it must be reiterated. This is simply not an enticing deal for the Lakers. They will want more.

They will specifically want Taj Gibson and/or Omer Asik, which leads us to the third point: If the Bulls parted ways with Boozer, Asik or Gibson and C.J. Watson to land Gasol, then they will have lost viable assets if they're seriously interested in pursuing Dwight Howard.

If the Bulls do attempt to acquire Dwight Howard in the coming weeks and months, then having both Gibson and Asik creates much more flexibility.

Now, it must be said that Asik will soon be a free agent and will most likely receive some financially alluring offers from other teams. Some argue that, because of this, they should trade him now.

But why part with him to get Gasol, who is past his prime, when the potential to land the best center in the league in Howard is still possible?

The last reason why Derrick Rose shouldn't labor for Gasol is that it will undoubtedly mess with team chemistry, if it hasn't already.

How does Carlos Boozer feel walking into the locker room if he knows the MVP wants him to be traded?

Further, the Bulls have already developed a healthy camaraderie. Pushing for something like this goes against the unity and family-like atmosphere they've created.

If the Bulls' personnel want to look into trading for Pau Gasol, then so be it. But there's no reason why Derrick Rose needs to lobby for any particular acquisitions. It's completely unnecessary and could truthfully end up causing more harm than good.
