Daytona 500 Odds: Dale Earnhardt Jr, Greg Biffle and Longshots Worth a Wager

Donald WoodFeb 22, 2012

With the Daytona 500 just days away, the odds makers have punched the numbers and the official odds have come out. Thanks to Vegas Insider for that.

While drivers like Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards have the expected top spots, there are some serious longshots that deserve a wager. It’s just too good to be true.

All of the following racers have a serious chance at a win on Sunday and should be considered if you do decide to partake in some legal gambling.

Dale Earnhardt Jr 18/1

While an 18/1 odds isn’t exactly a super longshot, it is a long enough shot to be more than worth the wager. With Dale Jr.’s history at Daytona and his track record of success, there is nothing to say that he doesn’t have the car to win.

Earnhardt needs to stay clear of the wrecks to be there at the end, but if there is one racer that can do that with the best, it’s Junior. Aside from that whole Bud Shootout wreck, whoops.

With an offseason of working hard to get a relationship built with his crew chief Steve Letarte and crew, this may be Earnhardt’s chance to get back into victory lane at the Daytona 500 for the first time since 2004.

Greg Biffle 25/1

If qualifying on the outside pole for the race wasn’t enough, look at the fact that Greg Biffle and the No. 16 team will be surrounded by fast Roush-Fenway cars in the front. With Carl Edwards alongside him, the tandem may be able to continually stay out front and fight for the win at the end.

With 25/1 odds on an outside pole winner, a betting man couldn’t help but let a few ride on a driver in Biffle that has been notoriously bad at Daytona.

After winning his first race on the Daytona track in 2003, Biffle has only finished inside the top-10 twice. With the kind of power he has under the hood this time, it may be time to bet the longshot.

Field 25/1

While this seems like a cheap way out, there aren’t the kinds of competitors in the field as you would think. The reason I took the field is because of last year’s winner Trevor Bayne.

With Bayne not receiving the respect he deserves but getting no odds for this race, the star in the making driving the historic No. 21 Wood Brothers car was lumped in with the rest of the Series zeros.

As long as Bayne is in this pack, there are enough drivers that respect him that he could possibly repeat. At 25/1 odds, the return would be well return the risk.
