Tiger Woods: Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano Will Regret Kicking Tiger While He's Down
Add Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano to the list of players who have called out Tiger Woods and called him beatable.
And while this time Fernandez-Castano has Tiger's recent play to support his theory, if anything close to the old Tiger shows up, it will be a very long day indeed for Fernandez-Castano during the first round of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship.
First, his comments, from Steve DiMeglio of USA TODAY:
"On Monday, however, while praising the former world No. 1, Fernandez-Castano did add, "I think he's beatable."
"I'm the underdog. I have nothing to lose. At the same time I don't think he's at his best," said Fernandez-Castano, who has five wins on the European Tour, including the 2011 Barclays Singapore Open, but is making his Accenture debut. "If I play well I can beat him."
"
If ever Tiger has been beatable, it is most certainly now. But why provide him with any motivation or extra edge in this match? Why make these comments that will most certainly get back to Tiger and likely only piss him off?
The only thing I can't think of is that Fernandez-Castano thinks he can get in Tiger's head by making him play angry. Or maybe he's just a really honest guy who is feeling confident going into this tournament, I don't know.
One way or another, it provides some interesting drama heading into what might otherwise be an uninteresting match on paper. And it might actually end up hurting Fernandez-Castano, and not just because he possibly awoke a sleeping Tiger.
No, with all of the attention his comments received, people will now be watching Fernandez-Castano very closely to see if he can back up his smack talk. In reality, the real pressure is now on him to prove his words weren't hollow.
Sometimes, it's best to just go out and play. Because nothing is more embarrassing than calling a guy like Tiger out and then getting crushed when play begins.
Just ask Stephen Ames. Or Rory Sabbatini. Or Vijay Singh's caddie, Paul Tesori.
We'll soon enough be adding Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano to that list.
