15 Most Hilarious Commercials Featuring Soccer Stars
Soccer has produced some ridiculous commercials over the years, and some good ones too.
Many of them are extremely funny, and feature worldwide stars such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Fans love to see their favorite players in commercials and there's no doubt that their favorite stars are often the ones showing up in them.
Even the United States gets a couple entries here.
In no particular order, here are 15 of the funniest commercials featuring soccer stars.
Let's watch some hilarious YouTube clips.
Manchester United vs Real Madrid
1 of 15This classic commercial features everyone's favorite footballer/underwear model/Spice Girl's husband, David Beckham.
Featured opposite Becks is Real Madrid stud Iker Casillas.
Also making a cameo at the end is one of the all-time Madrid greats, Ronaldo.
Borrowing Cristiano Ronaldo's Shirt
2 of 15Manchester United's kit manager takes Cristiano Ronaldo's shirt for a test run, and takes on his abilities.
The real comedy of this commercial is the reactions exhibited by both Rio Ferdinand and Ronaldo himself.
Ferdinand is more entertained than anything else, while Ronaldo has something of a "c'mon" expression about him.
There's something hilarious about Ronaldo trapped in an old man's body.
"Write the Future"
3 of 15This was an advertisement for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and features some of the world's biggest stars.
While it is not a purely comedic commercial, it certainly has elements of humor sprinkled throughout.
My personal favorite is the scene following Fabio Cannavaro's goal-line clearance. The classic Italian guy belting out an ode to Cannavaro is awesome to me.
Other stars featured in the commercial are numerous: Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney, Franck Ribery and Ronaldinho all make appearances.
Spanish superstars Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique make a brief cameo, while Cristiano Ronaldo makes a prolonged appearance at the end.
Even Roger Federer shows up.
This commercial is stacked with talent, and certainly has some laughs.
Lionel Messi Outsmarted by African Wildlife
4 of 15Commercials are funnier when they feature animals doing things that are impossible.
It's science.
So naturally, seeing three time World Footballer of the Year Leo Messi being out free-kicked by rodents has some potential for giggles.
But by far the funniest part of this ad is the end, in which Messi makes extremely creepy grinning expressions and points at the camera.
Disturbing.
Sumos vs Pros
5 of 15Sumo wrestlers playing soccer against David Beckham and the boys of Real Madrid for a cooler full of Pepsi.
A 500-pound bicycle kick?
Need I say more?
Brazilians with Beyonce
6 of 15Brazilian soccer players are known for their beautiful moves on the soccer pitch, but I don't think anybody saw this coming.
Young Brazilian stars Robinho, Neymar, and Ganso treat us to a little Samba, complete with Beyonce soundtrack.
This commercial is downright awful.
Awesome.
Neymar Thinks England Is the North Pole
7 of 15Unfortunately, I don't speak Portuguese, so I can't tell you exactly what Brazilian starlet Neymar is saying in this commercial.
Fortunately, the kind producers of Guarana provided us with pictures.
I imagine it goes something like this.
"Neymar, why don't you want to go to Europe?"
"It's freezing cold, it's freezing cold, and they don't have Guarana."
I'm just going by the pictures, folks.
Stick Figure Football
8 of 15Without a doubt, the best part of this commercial is the completely unfitting voice assigned to stick-figure Messi.
He sounds like stoned foreign teenager kicking a ball around in an alleyway. His stick figure persona also reminds me of Speedy Gonzales.
That's what I took out of it, anyway.
Satan's Soccer Team
9 of 15If the boundless depths of hell fielded a soccer squad, this is what it would look like.
As these mutations take to the pitch, they also bring with them Lucifer's referee, who is quite literally blind.
Having had enough of their fiendish opponents, the stars of Europe produce a beautiful buildup that sets up Manchester United great Eric Cantona for an uncontested fireball explosion shot.
Only in an overseas Nike commercial.
Brazil vs Portugal
10 of 15In a throwback, Nike captures the rivalry between the two Portuguese speaking countries. Brazil and Portugal.
Both countries are well known for their exploits when it comes to silky smooth dribbles, and both have had great success at the international level.
The musical number provided in this one really lends some childlike innocence to the heated battle.
It almost makes the two sides feel like an old, married couple.
US Women's National Team
11 of 15Billed "The Greatest Team You've Never Heard Of" (presumably by themselves), the US women's national team has been fairly successful over the past couple years.
Unfortunately, they were beaten in the Women's World Cup final.
At least we got this brilliant commercial—starring Rainn Wilson of NBC's "The Office" as the USWNT's new PR rep.
Altidore: This Is Sportscenter
12 of 15Jozy Altidore's "This is Sportscenter" was pure genius when it came out—and remains pure genius today.
The tradition of trading shirts with an opposing player after a soccer match is a long and well-respected one.
However, it is not one that sports in America observe.
While the Sportscenter commercials are usually pretty good, I thought this one was up there with the best of them.
"It's an Italian shirt."
"Yeah, it's nice."
Donovan: This Is Sportscenter
13 of 15After the Altidore "This is Sportscenter," Landon Donovan had a lot to live up to.
Fortunately, the guy (and the script writers) nailed it.
The copy machine is clearly playing the card-happy referee, who is just itching to book players.
Donovan gives it one little kick and he's in the book.
Soon after, the machine sends him off.
Tough day at the office.
Beckham Gets a Surprise
14 of 15After being taken off the pitch for reasons unknown, Manchester United great David Beckham is already having a bad day.
In the tunnel, he is granted a drink from a random child's can of Pepsi.
Already a strange occurrence.
Next, Beckham seems to perk up a bit when the kid asks for Beckham's shirt.
Feeling wanted again, Becks happily obliges the kid, only to watch him wipe the mouth of the can and hand the shirt back.
"Thanks, mate," replies the kid as he turns back towards the pitch, revealing his Juventus ties.
Mr. Posh Spice was never going to win that one.
Ref Has No Coins Left
15 of 15The referee of a Man U vs. Juventus game finds himself in an awkward situation after spending all his coins on Pepsi.
Trying to get himself one, several players approach just as he purchases the drinks, and take them without repayment.
Finally, the ref is able to get a Pepsi, but at the expense of his last coin.
In the end, David Beckham wins a Rock-Paper-Scissors contest to procure first possession.
