2012 NFL Free Agent Target of the Day for Every NFC East Team

Erik FrenzJun 1, 2018

Dallas Cowboys: Tyvon Branch, safety

The Cowboys need help on defense, but specifically in coverage. They looked lost at times, and despite a front seven that generated 42 sacks (ninth in the NFL), they gave up an 88.4 passer rating to opposing quarterbacks (25th).

Tyvon Branch proved how effective he can be in coverage. He was the only singular defensive back that was even remotely capable of covering Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, holding the All-Pro tight end to just one reception in the game. He could really help a secondary that ranked 22nd in the NFL against tight ends according to stats and analysis site Football Outsiders.

New York Giants: Randy McMichael, tight end

With such a dire situation in terms of the salary cap, the Giants won't have much room to make a move. With an even more dire situation at tight end, though, they may have to. Both Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum are expected to begin the 2012 season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, and the Giants will need answers at tight end.

Enter journeyman tight end Randy McMichael, who played 67.1 percent of the team's offensive snaps last year, primarily as a pass-blocker. He caught 30 passes last year and has 417 receptions in his 10-year career. He'd be a nice one-year stop gap at tight end while the Giants wait to get their other tight ends healthy again.

Philadelphia Eagles: LaRon Landry, safety

The Eagles learned the hard way that spending a lot of money in free agency doesn't equal a lot of success on Sundays. Despite making a pair of big moves by bringing in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha in 2011, the team could use some help in the secondary, specifically in run support.

LaRon Landry isn't the world's best cover safety, but his value against the run is hard to ignore. Pro Football Focus' Sam Monson points out that DRC, Asomugha and Asante Samuel were all among the worst tackling defensive backs in the NFL. Landry would provide some much-needed clean-up support on the back end, and with the injury bug remaining a factor, he could come at a fairly cheap price.

Washington Redskins: Brandon Carr, cornerback

Just like the Cowboys, the Redskins didn't have much trouble getting after the quarterback (41 sacks in 2011); their bigger problems came in coverage (87.4 defensive passer rating). It's not always as easy as plugging in stud defensive backs, but knowing the way owner Dan Snyder operates, it's certainly possible they'll go after Brandon Carr.

Carr, who is set to become a free agent for the Kansas City Chiefs, was all but shown the door on Monday when the team signed free agent Stanford Routt. There will certainly be a lot of teams in the market for Carr, but it's hard not to put the Redskins in the discussion when it comes to any big-name free agents—especially one they really need, like Carr.
