UFC 144 Results: Benson Henderson Makes Huge Statement with Victory vs. Edgar
Benson Henderson's journey back to the top of the lightweight mountain ended with his victory over Frankie Edgar at UFC 144 on Saturday night.
The former WEC titleholder can now add UFC lightweight champion to his impressive resume. Since jumping to the UFC after the merge with WEC, Henderson has been making his way through the 155-pound division.
With his victory over Edgar, Henderson holds a 4-0 record in the premier mixed martial arts organization in the world. He has beaten three of the best lightweights in the world in succession—Jim Miller, Clay Guida and Frankie Edgar.
What Does it Mean?
Henderson could just be scratching the surface in his career. He may never be the most technically sound fighter, but he is great to watch and has a natural charisma that can make him a superstar.
At just 28 years old, he has plenty of great years ahead of him. Trying to predict what is going to happen in this sport is dangerous, simply due to the unfortunate and dubious nature of injuries and other unforeseen circumstances, but Henderson could have a long, sustained run at the top of the division.
What Happens Next?
With Henderson's victory, there are now a number of places the UFC could look to go with him. There is a logjam of contenders that need to be separated in the coming months before Henderson's next fight is decided.
The winner between Jim Miller and Nate Diaz at the next UFC on FOX special in May will likely end up as the next challenger, but since that fight is over two months away, Dana White and company could look to find an opponent for Henderson sooner.
Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez would be an obvious candidate, but it sounds like he is staying put for the time being.
