NFL Combine 2012: Justin Blackmon and More Players Headed for Combine Failure

Adam WellsJun 5, 2018

The NFL scouting combine is our first chance to get a long look at the players who will help shape the league's future. As we know, this is also the time when prospects hurt their stock for one reason or another.

Any college player can look great on tape, but this is a whole new ballgame. If they measure in at just 6'0 instead of 6'2", teams are going to reconsider going with a player in a certain spot.

This week is all about the measurables. Here are the college studs who will be workout duds in Indianapolis.

Justin Blackmon, WR

While there is no denying that Blackmon looks the part, his top speed could become a question mark after this week.

He has a great physique at 6'1", 210 pounds, but he has never been a burner on the field. He was able to run through college cornerbacks because they are smaller and don't possess the same speed you will find in the NFL.

Unless he can run in the low-4.5 range during the 40-yard dash, his stock is going to take a big hit. He will still be the top receiver taken, though it could be in the back half of the top 10.

Brock Osweiler, QB

Osweiler is moving up draft boards thanks to his size and potential, but he has never been a dominant quarterback. He had good numbers last year at Arizona State—4,036 yards, 26 touchdowns, completion percentage of 63.2.

There are a lot of flaws that he must correct before he can start an NFL game. His biggest problem is recognizing coverage and throwing accuracy.

His release is slow and he winds up to throw the ball, which will lead to him turning it over and making poor throws more often than he should.

Mike Adams, OT

This year's draft is loaded with offensive linemen, so Adams has a lot of pressure on his shoulders this week. His stock is dropping already and this is his last chance to prove he deserves to be a first-round pick.

Unfortunately, his measurables will not be good enough. He has the size to succeed in the NFL, but lapses in judgement, awkward technique, injury history and problems off the field are going to push his stock down.

Adams certainly looks the part of an offensive lineman. His biggest problem will be convincing teams he deserves to be taken on Day 1.
