Andre Villas-Boas Seat Even Hotter After Chelsea's FA Cup Draw with Birmingham
As Chelsea's woes just keep accumulating, the ice that Andre Villas-Boas is skating on just keeps getting thinner.
The Blues entered Saturday's FA cup tie with Birmingham, a team struggling to hold onto a playoff spot in the Championship, on an incredible skid.
With only three points from their last four Premier League matches, including their worst display of the season just last week in a loss to Everton, Chelsea's form had certainly been below par.
And with a public row between the players and manager that led to Villas-Boas very strange statement that it does not matter if his players do not back him, the pressure was squarely on AVB's shoulders.
Even Chelsea keeper Petr Cech said before the match that only a win would be the acceptable result.
However, after more horrendous defending (a staple of the Blues' season thus far), this time seeing David Luiz and Raul Meireles fail to deal with a near-post corner, Chelsea found themselves trailing.
When Juan Mata missed a penalty and Chelsea went into halftime with the deficit still intact, portions of the crowd began turning on the Portuguese manager.
Distinct chants for Jose Mourinho, the ex-Chelsea manager whose current stint at Real Madrid is likely to end at the conclusion of the season, hounded AVB.
While Chelsea were able to turn the match around through a Daniel Sturridge strike and send the tie to a replay, Villas-Boas seems to have surely reached the end of his rope (especially given the quick trigger finger of Roman Abramovich).
One more major loss, whether that come from elimination in the Champions League, FA Cup, or from top four contention, and AVB's fate is sealed.
The first of these do-or-die matches is this Tuesday at Napoli.
For neutrals, this will make Chelsea matches all the more interesting.
For supporters, it will make them all the more difficult to watch.
