Michigan Football: Most Compelling Storylines Heading into Spring Practice

Ryan RudnanskyJun 3, 2018

Coming off an 11-2 season, the Michigan Wolverines are gearing up for another big season, backed by a strong recruiting class.

As with every season, players have come and gone, and quarterback Denard Robinson looks to lead the team to another BCS bowl.

Here's a look at the Wolverines' biggest storylines heading into the beginning of spring practice on March 17.

3. Offensive Line

With center David Molk and right tackle Mark Huyge moving on, the Wolverines will need other players to step up on the offensive line.

With Molk and Huyge on board last season, the Wolverines averaged 33.3 points per game and averaged 221.8 rushing yards, 13th in the nation.

Rocko Khoury appears to be the favorite to replace Molk heading into spring practice, but he did have issues snapping the ball in the Sugar Bowl last season. If he can't get the job done, look for guard Ricky Barnum to slide into the center spot.

At right tackle, guard Michael Schofield has the size and ability to move over to the edge. The Wolverines also picked up promising recruits Erik Magnuson, Ben Braden and Kyle Kalis.

In the end, I have confidence the Wolverines will be able to straighten out their O-line. They certainly have a lot of depth in that area.

2. Defensive Line

The Wolverines may have allowed just 17.4 points per game last season (sixth in the nation), but they have gaping holes on the defensive line this season.

Losing defensive tackle Mike Martin is a big blow, as well as Ryan Van Bergen moving on, who led the team with 5.5 sacks last season. Starting lineman Will Heininger will also be gone in 2012.

It's looking like freshmen may have to play big parts on the Wolverines this season for them to replicate their success on that side of the ball. Ondre Pipkins, a 6'2", 325-pound monster at defensive tackle, could be the next big thing on the D-line for the Wolverines. Michigan also picked up defensive end Chris Wormley. Both are 4-star recruits according to ESPNU.

1. Denard Robinson

Denard Robinson had a spectacular season in 2011 and was the main catalyst for the Wolverines.

But he's faced with a different offensive line this season and receivers Junior Hemingway, Kelvin Grady, Kevin Koger, Steve Watson and Martavious Odoms have all left the team.

That's going to make things even more difficult for Robinson this season. Improving his pocket passing would work wonders.

Let's put it this way: If Robinson leads the Wolverines to another BCS bowl this season, he could be the Heisman winner.
