Klitschko vs. Chisora: Why Boxing Needs Dereck Chisora To Pull Huge Upset

Tim KeeneyJun 5, 2018

If you were to ask a non-boxing fan who the heavyweight champion of the world currently is, they might just tell you Manny Pacquiao or CM Punk.

It's fairly pathetic (OK, really pathetic), but this is just how far the heavyweight division has fallen. There's no doubt the common Joe or Jane would have been able to name Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson in the past.

Boxing needs something to pull this division out of its rut.

Enter Vitali Klitschko vs. Dereck Chisora.

These two guys couldn't be more different. Klitschko is an absolute machine who bears similarities to Ivan Drago. He stands at a massive 6'7", he has held the WBC title for almost eight years and even at the age of 40 he's a clear favorite against anyone and everyone.

His nickname is freakin' Dr. Ironfist.

On the other side of the ring, you have the 28-year-old Dereck Chisora. He's seven inches shorter and has lost two of his last three fights. Granted, he got robbed against Robert Helenius, but he looked fairly terrible against Tyson Fury.

His nickname is Del Boy. Boring.

You have one guy who has a complete stronghold on the division and is so unbeatable it's boring and you have one guy who seemingly doesn't belong in this fight.

Oh boy does boxing need this.

And by "this," I mean Chisora pulling the upset. Because it would mean a few things.

First of all, Klitschkko would no longer be champion. He is a fantastic, dominating fighter, but fans have a hard time relating with a 41-year-old who is getting more and more involved with politics. A young, inconsistent fighter who is originally from Zimbabwe would be a lot more "fun" to watch.

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated puts it this way:

"

"I'm thinking about the possibilities created by having a flawed 6-foot-1 titleholder instead of an unbeatable 6-foot-7 monster."

"

Second, a Chisora victory would add some excitement to the division. It has been so long since there's been an upset and Chisora—the clear underdog in this one—would change that.

Also, since Chisora is so inconsistent, this would open up chances for other boxers to step up and make their mark. Without Klitschko, the competition would be leveled.

It's simple really.

Klitschko is too good and lacks the star power. It's about time he stepped aside, and Chisora can speed up that process.

The heavyweight division needs a wake-up call. Some spice. Something different. Although this upset is very unlikely to happen, it would serve as that wake-up call.

I know who I'm rooting for. A vote for Chisora is a vote for boxing.
