Klitschko vs Chisora: Del Boy Destined to Give Dr. Ironfist a Good Fight

Josh MartinJun 6, 2018

Saturday's fight between Vitali Klitschko and Dereck Chisora figures to be a change of pace from the usual monotony atop boxing's heavyweight division.

Not that the ultimate result—another title defense for Klitschko—is going to be any different, but rather the means to that end should bring a bit of intrigue.

It wouldn't exactly be a stretch to suggest that most of Dr. Ironfist's fights aren't all that interesting. The 6'7" Ukrainian giant has towered over his competition, both literally and figuratively, in a heavyweight class that's as devoid of talent and depth as it's ever been.

Del Boy, though, is hardly just another tomato can to fall in front of a Klitschko brother. The big Briton is a quality competitor who makes things fun and exciting in the ring, pressing the action and going for knockouts while owning a strong enough chin to absorb significant damage in return.

Chisora also happens to be 12 years younger and, as a result, fresher and hungrier than the 40-year-old Klitschko, who's looking to defend his title for an eighth time.

Don't expect Chisora to be intimidated by Klitschko's seven-inch height advantage, either. Not even three months have passed since Chisora gave Robert Helenius, the 6'6" Finnish giant, the fight of his life in Helsinki. Chisora was able to get inside on the Nordic Nightmare and wear him down with body shots and strong right hands while masterfully handling Helenius' side.

Chisora was ultimately denied victory in a controversial defeat by split decision on Helenius' home turf, but he showed himself capable of handling bigger, more imposing opponents all the same.

Of course, Klitschko is a far better fighter than Helenius will ever be, so success against the latter won't necessarily translate to the same against the former.

But, if nothing else, Chisora's experience with fighting taller opponents, combined with his own toughness and aggressive approach, should allow him to give Klitschko a run for his money, even if the end result is a third loss in his last four fights.
