Klitschko vs Chisora: Heavyweight Division Will Keep Sliding in Boring Bout
The world of heavyweight boxing is about to get the last thing it needs—a championship fight that the public barely knows and doesn't care about.
Champion Vitali Klitschko is going to make quick work of Dereck Chisora, but that's only part of the problem. A short fight could be forgiven if at least one of the fighters had a personality for the viewing public to get behind, or even against.
Think back to when George Foreman defeated Joe Frazier. From a pure boxing perspective, it was a terrible fight—Foreman knocked Frazier down six times in two rounds.
Sure, we remember the call.
But we also remember that fight because people had an interest in both fighters. There was a reason to love both fighters. They were legends in the ring and stood out away from it.
The same can't be said about either Klitschko or Chisora. People don't care about them because we don't really know who they are. This is something that has to change if the heavyweight division is ever going to regain some of its past glory.
If you have personality in the division, you can get away with a boring bout. I don't think that anyone ever described a Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson fight as boring, even if it only lasted a couple of rounds.
But without one personality to sell the fight, even a 12-round classic won't save it. This particular bout will bring boxing the worst of both worlds.
Klitschko is an absolute machine who hasn't lost a fight in nearly nine years. Chisora on the other hand is badly under-qualified for this fight. He has only 17 career fights to his name and has dropped two of the last three.
So, in addition to being a fight between two vacant personalities, it will be short. It won't take Klitschko long to establish himself as the superior fighter. He will open up a big lead early, forcing Chisora to go for the knockout. That is where Klitschko will end things.
Look for this bout to end in the sixth round with a Klitschko knockout. At this time next week, I am not sure how many people will even remember that the fight took place.
