2012 Westminster Dog Show: High Viewership Proves Event Is Massive Hit

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

More than three million people tuned in to watch final-day coverage of the 2012 Westminster Dog Show, according to Bill Gorman. Those numbers prove the event, which is the Super Bowl of its kind, is a massive hit with viewers.

It was the third most watched television show on Tuesday night behind only Teen Mom 2 and The Big Bang Theory. That's a terrific performance for a show which is only on once a year, meaning it has no chance to build an audience.

Those who did watch on the USA Network got to see Malachy, a four-year-old Pekingese, finish off the night in style by taking home the Best in Show ribbon. It was his 115th career title, but first at the marquee dog show of the year.

The reasons for the show's success are wide-ranging, but none more important than uniqueness. Getting to see some of the best dogs in the country is a rare treat, and animal lovers from all corners of the country tune in to get a glimpse.

Trainers and handlers take this show very seriously, which makes it all the more interesting. Winning the Westminster event, which takes place inside Madison Square Garden, is the pinnacle of their profession and it shows.

Speaking of MSG, the place was packed to watch the perfectly groomed pooches strut their stuff. You would have thought Jeremy Lin was playing with some of the loud cheers that erupted when the dogs were jogging around the arena.

That added a lot to the atmosphere, which helps the show translate to television. If it were just dogs and judges, it wouldn't be as intriguing. The fan environment gives it a sports feel.

All told, it's a fun event that should only become more popular in the coming years. Now that the USA Network understands how popular it can be, look for it to be advertised more prominently before next year's telecast.

And since Malachy is likely off to enjoy a well-deserved retirement, it opens the door for a new winner to be crowned in 2013.
