UFC on FUEL Results: What's Next for Each Fighter?
The inaugural UFC on FUEL card was stacked in terms of exciting fighters, and the card did not disappoint.
The main event saw a possible title challenger emerge, while several other fighters decided to make the "Knockout of the Night" bonus a tough decision to make.
Add to the fact, the crowd in Omaha made the event special by going nuts the entire night.
So where does each fighter go from here?
Bernardo Magalhaes
1 of 18Bernardo Magalhaes did not look like a fighter ready to grace the Octagon last night.
Unable to get the fight on the ground against Tim Means, Magalhaes was absolutely manhandled by Means for three rounds. I would not be surprised if the UFC cut him after such a poor performance.
If he does stick around, he will probably be used to get a veteran on a losing steak a rebound fight. If they chose to give him a match up that gives him a chance, they could match him up with his original opponent on the card, Yoislandy Izquierdo.
Tim Means/Justin Salas
2 of 18Tim Means looked like a developmental version of Carlos Condit last night, probably attributed to the fact that he worked with Condit's old trainer. Means battered Bernardo Magalhaes for three rounds, stamping his entry to UFC.
Justin Salas showed some serious power in his debut against Anton Kuivanen, showing off great wrestling and solid striking.
Both of these men are still prospects, so throwing them into the mix right away is not a great idea. Let Means and Salas fight each other to give them more experience in the Octagon and so they can learn from one another.
Anton Kuivanen
3 of 18Anton Kuivanen did not look bad in his debut, despite dropping a decision to Justin Salas.
Despite being taken down, Kuivanen looked comfortable off of his back, as well as showing solid striking ability.
Kuivanen is still a prospect and he will be looking to rebound following this loss. Let him fight his original opponent on the card, CJ Keith, to see who the better prospect is.
Buddy Roberts/Sean Loeffler
4 of 18The fight that did not happen.
Sean Loeffler had the misfortune of injuring his ankle badly in warm ups. Although disappointing, it makes their next fights obvious.
Buddy Roberts and Loeffler should square off whenever Loeffler's ankle heals. Let them finish what was never even started.
Vagner Rocha
5 of 18Vagner Rocha really could not get it started last night.
As quickly as it began, it ended for Rocha, who pulled guard on Johnathan Brookins and was knocked out cold. This loss put him at 1-2 in the UFC, 0-1 as a featherweight.
Rocha is still a threat when the fight hits the mat, as jujitsu is his most dangerous weapon. Antonio Carvalho lost at UFC 142 in Brazil, but showed a solid ground game that could be competitive in a fight with Rocha.
Set it up.
Johnathan Brookins
6 of 18Johnathan Brookins looked good in his brief bout last night, using powerful ground and pound on Vagner Rocha to seal the deal.
Brookins has a good ground game, with developing striking. He has proved that he can step up and win important fights, despite what his fight against Erik Koch proved.
Yuri Alcantara is coming off a big win at UFC 142. Alcantara is another blue chip prospect at featherweight, and a fight with Brookins could prove to be exciting, as well as important.
John Albert
7 of 18John Albert, despite losing last night, looked very good in his bout with Ivan Menjivar.
Albert showed very improved striking, as well as great submission attempts, as he constantly looked to finish Menjivar. His omoplata on Menjivar looked to be very close.
Another Ultimate Fighter alumni coming off a loss and looking for a dance partner is Alex Caceres. Caceres is coming off the controversial loss to Edwin Figueroa at UFC 143 and is probably looking for a quick turn around fight.
I'm sure Albert will be ready soon enough to compete.
Ivan Menjivar
8 of 18Ivan Menjivar took the back and forth fight with John Albert, then secured the match by clinching a rear naked choke.
Menjivar's experience and complete skill set allow him to overcome adversity and turn the tides of fights. He is now on a three fight winning streak and will be looking for a quick turnaround.
He found himself in several submission attempts last night, so it may be a good test if he fights a grappler in his next fight. Raphael Assuncao is currently without an opponent, which could give Menjivar his submission defense test.
Walel Watson
9 of 18Walel Watson was given zero chances of victory last night by the ferocious TJ Dillashaw.
Watson is still an intriguing fighter though, with his length, height and flashy striking.
The UFC could get rid of Watson following his second straight loss, but I see that as foolish. Match him up with another lanky fighter like Johnny Eduardo, who is also coming off a loss, and see which fighter is more deserving of a spot in the UFC.
TJ Dillashaw
10 of 18TJ Dillashaw looked very good last night, getting back to his winning ways against Walel Watson.
Using his strong wrestling attack, Dillashaw completely outclassed his opponent last night to a lopsided decision. It looks like he is still developing his submission skills, but nonetheless, his ground game is exceptional.
Nick Denis is coming off a quick knockout of Joseph Sandoval. He is also relatively new to the UFC, so a confrontation with Dillashaw at an upcoming event could be a good test for both men.
Phil De Fries
11 of 18Phil De Fries looks to be like a one trick pony.
Despite landing a couple of looping punches on Stipe Miocic, De Fries was disposed of quickly. He was blasted with powerful punches en route to a knockout loss.
De Fries is still developing his skills. Coming off of a loss, he will need to find an opponent who is looking to get back on track as well. Matt Mitrione is in need of a comeback victory, so this could be a match that both men need to get back in the win column.
Stipe Miocic
12 of 18Stipe Miocic is a beast, plain and simple.
Miocic quickly knocked out Phil De Fries last night, showing dominance in his second UFC fight. Miocic has great boxing, wrestling and overall power, making him a nightmare for most of the heavyweight division.
UFC 145 in Atlanta hosts an important heavyweight clash between Brendan Schaub and Ben Rothwell. Both of these men are currently higher on the food chain than Miocic, so whomever should lose could serve as Miocic's next opponent.
Aaron Simpson
13 of 18Aaron Simpson showed some promise early with his hands, but subsequently fell to the larger, more well rounded Ronny Markes.
At 37, one has to question how much longer Simpson can go. Simpson says that he wants to drop to welterweight, so we will see what happens.
Assuming he stays at middleweight, a showdown with CB Dollaway could serve as a crucial, perfect bout for both men. Sharing a wrestling background would force both to rely on their all around games and help both men advance in their careers.
Ronny Markes
14 of 18Ronny Markes picked up the split decision victory last night, but the real story is how good Markes looked after cutting from the 205 pound division.
Markes showed no signs of a tough weight cut, as he outmuscled and outworked Aaron Simpson. He even took down the high level wrestler twice (Simpson had only been taken down three times to that point in the UFC).
Markes looks to be a good talent. Later this month, Tim Boetsch and Yushin Okami will throw down in Japan. The loser could serve as Markes' next opponent.
Dave Herman
15 of 18Dave Herman looked flat last night. Maybe it was the body hair, maybe it was from over-hyping the bout.
Herman landed some powerful shots on Struve, but in general did not look like a world beater. His striking is decent and his ground game is okay, but improvements need to be made.
Herman needs to rebound, and a fight against a savvy veteran like Rob Broughton could serve as his comeback fight. Should he falter, he could be cut. Should he triumph, we could see a resurgence of "Pee Wee."
Stefan Struve
16 of 18Stefan Struve lacked a ton of energy last night, but that could have been the jet lag. The important thing is he won.
Struve used his range and superior ground game to finish off Herman. He continues to be resilient, and win fights.
Later this month in Japan, Mark Hunt and Chieck Kongo will square off in a key heavyweight affair. Whoever should win could fight Struve in their next fight to see who advances further up the ladder.
Diego Sanchez
17 of 18Diego Sanchez continues to show his resiliency, relentlessness and insanity.
His cage walk was epic, his pressure was typical and his near comeback was crazy. Sanchez is still a great welterweight, but needs to get back on track following his loss to Jake Ellenberger.
An exciting bout that comes to mind is Diego versus Josh Neer. Both men are durable, exciting and skilled. Pitting these two against each other could lead to yet another "Fight of the Night."
Jake Ellenberger
18 of 18Jake Ellenberger is for real.
Ellenberger showed his complete skill set in his exciting victory over Diego Sanchez. He looks like a top five welterweight as of right now, which gives him options.
Ellenberger has proven that he is ready to challenge Carlos Condit for his Interim Welterweight Championship. Should that fight not materialize due to a Condit/St. Pierre match up, Ellenberger could find an opponent in the winner of the Martin Kampmann versus Thiago Alves fight.
