UFC on Fuel TV 1: What's Next for the Winners and Losers
The UFC's first event on Fuel TV delivered with an action-packed main event between welterweight contenders Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez.
The winner took a big step in the division and may be next in line to face interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit.
In the co-main event, heavyweight Stefan Struve took on Dave Herman, who was coming off a Fight of the Night performance in his last fight.
Other main-card bouts included T.J. Dillashaw vs. Walel Watson, Stipe Miocic vs. Philip De Fries, Ivan Menjivar vs. John Albert and Ronny Markes vs. Aaron Simpson.
This is what's next for tonight's winners and losers.
Ivan Menjivar Defeats John Albert Via Rear-Naked Choke in Round 1
1 of 6Ivan Menjivar (24-8) had to survive an early attack by John Albert (7-2) in the opening round of their bantamweight bout, but the "Pride of El Salvador" was able to stay composed and pull off a rear-naked choke that forced Albert to tap.
It kicked off the main card of tonight's event, and with Menjivar currently riding a three-fight win streak in the UFC, he can face the T.J. Dillashaw, who defeated Walel Watson on the same card, in his next fight.
Albert falls to 1-1 in the UFC, but in the bantamweight division, he will be given another opportunity to get a victory and stay in the organization.
A fight versus Watson, who fell short against Dillashaw, makes sense for both fighters.
T.J. Dillashaw Defeats Walel Watson Via Unanimous Decision
2 of 6T.J. Dillashaw (5-1) was able to pick up his first UFC victory when he dominated Watson (9-4) to win a unanimous decision with the judges' scores 30-25, 30-25 and 30-26.
Dillashaw was able to out-land his opponent, 125 strikes to nine, throughout the three-round distance.
With only six bouts in two years of professional experience, Dillashaw still has a lot of time to improve and develop his skills while building his record. A fight with Ivan Menjivar would be good for both fighters.
As previously stated, Watson can take on Albert, who lost to Menjivar.
Stipe Miocic Defeats Philip De Fries Via TKO in Round 1
3 of 6Stipe Miocic (8-0) was able to stay undefeated and hand Philip De Fries (8-1) his first career loss after landing some brutal strikes to knock him out 43 seconds into the opening round.
The Croatian is beginning to make a name for himself in the UFC, and the road to the title is short in the heavyweight division.
With two fights under his belt, a fight versus Gabriel Gonzaga (13-6) will let fans know just where he stands.
De Fries didn't have much of a chance to showcase his skills inside the Octagon, but he will be given another fight just based on the division he is fighting in.
To pair him up with another recent fighter coming off a loss, he can take on Edinaldo Oliveira, who lost to Gonzaga in quick fashion at UFC 142.
Ronny Markes def. Aaron Simpson Via Split Decision
4 of 6Middleweights Ronny Markes (13-1) and Aaron Simpson (11-3) had a closely contested bout for three rounds, but Markes would be the one leaving with the split-decision victory. The scores were 29-28 Markes, 29-28 Simpson and 29-28 Markes.
With the win, Markes also left with an injured right hand.
It wasn't the only adversity he had to fight through, as Simpson was close to finishing him in the first round before he was able to rebound in the second and third rounds.
Simpson is contemplating a move to welterweight, and with Markes getting a win over a good opponent, which was his second victory in the UFC, the Brazilian can fight the winner of Court McGee vs. Constantinos Philippou or Ed Herman.
Stefan Struve Defeats Dave Herman Via TKO in Round 2
5 of 6Stefan Struve (23-5) improved his UFC record to 7-3 with a second-round TKO win over Dave "Pee Wee" Herman (21-3) in the co-main event, and it was arguably his most impressive Octagon win to date.
Herman entered as one of the more hyped heavyweight fighters in the sport, and his record proved it. With 15 knockout wins to his credit, Herman knew where his best chance would be.
Struve was able to showcase his ever-improving striking and dropped Herman before getting the finish from mount.
For Struve's next fight, it should come against a quality heavyweight like Mike Russow.
Russow, who is currently 4-0 in the UFC, makes for an intriguing fight.
Herman's next fight could come against the loser of Brendan Schaub and Ben Rothwell.
Jake Ellenberger Defeats Diego Sanchez by Unanimous Decision
6 of 6Jake Ellenberger (27-5) had to dig deep to survive some threatening positions against Diego Sanchez (23-5) in the third round of their main-event fight, but "The Juggernaut" was able to win the first two and secure a unanimous decision victory over three rounds.
With the win, Ellenberger sets himself up for a possible rematch with current interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit.
When they first met in 2009, Ellenberger was making his UFC debut. He was able to drop Condit early, but was eventually out-worked before losing a split-decision.
Sanchez once again proved he is never out of a fight till the final bell, and his position in the division still remains clear.
A fight versus Mike Pierce, who lost two very close decisions to Josh Koscheck and Johny Hendricks, would give both fighters a chance to get back on the winning track.
