Beanpot 2012: Championship Game's Biggest Difference-Makers

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

It wasn't exactly a surprise that the Boston College Eagles and Boston University Terriers made it to the Beanpot Championship Game this year.

They had the most talent out of all the teams in the tournament and they had combined for the last 18 Beanpot championships.

That's why this has become the fiercest rivalry in college hockey.

But who will come away with the trophy in 2012? Here's a look at the players to watch for on Monday night.

3. Matt Nieto, Boston University

Sophomore Matt Nieto has averaged an impressive 1.16 points this season for the Terriers, notching 11 goals and 18 assists in 25 games.

Nieto is an explosive player with excellent speed and an impressive skill set. Beyond that, his acceleration allows him to get into the second gear quicker than other players and open up space for the offense to operate. He's been a big player for the Terriers this season.

Nieto scored BU's first goal of the game in their 3-1 defeat of Harvard in the semifinals.

2. Barry Almeida, Boston College

Senior Barry Almeida has scored 11 goals in 29 games this season, tied for 11th in college hockey. He doesn't have much of an overall game, but what he can do is score and score in bunches.

Almeida's a bit small, but he's a good skater who has the skills to take advantage of opportunities and make defenses pay.

Almeida tallied one goal and one assist in the Eagles' 7-1 trouncing of Northeastern in the semifinals.

1. Chris Kreider, Boston College

Junior Chris Kreider has averaged 1.17 points per game this season for the Eagles, notching 19 goals and 15 assists in 29 games.

Kreider's combination of size and speed projects him as a solid player at the next level and he's shown the ability to rise to the occasion. He won the 2011 Beanpot MVP.

Kreider didn't make much of an impact against Northeastern, but he's just too talented to stay quiet in the Championship Game.
