Randy Moss Watch: Odds the Free Agent WR Lands with Each AFC East Team
Randy Moss is one of the most productive wide receivers in NFL history. That's why, when he announced his return to football via Ustream on Monday morning, the world stopped to take notice.
He was simply electric in his prime—even past his prime—and was one of the most athletically gifted players to ever line up in the NFL.
Of course, it wasn't all sunshine, rainbows, kisses and flowers for Moss in his career. If it were, he may never have had to retire in the first place. And as such, it makes his return to the NFL unclear.
Not to mention the issue of whether or not he has anything left in the tank after posting career lows across the board in 2010 and taking the entire 2011 season off.
Will any teams be interested? Here are my thoughts on the odds of him landing with each AFC East team.
New York Jets
1 of 4Why: The Jets, like just about any team, need help at wide receiver. The Plaxico Burress experiment didn't work out quite as they had planned, and Sanchez could definitely use a player like Moss in the red zone.
The Jets lacked viable downfield threats outside the numbers, and Moss has proven to be that in the past.
Why not: Is he even a downfield threat anymore? Whether or not the stories about Moss' character are true (and let's get real—has that ever stopped the Jets in the past?), the Jets are cleaning up their locker room and don't need to add to the potential for more problems.
Odds: 10 percent
Buffalo Bills
2 of 4Why: The Bills don't have any uber-talented receivers outside of Johnson, and have been known to take a shot on a diva—remember Terrell Owens?
No matter where he signs, Moss likely won't command a big contract, which is good news for a team like the Bills, should they want to explore the option.
Why not: The Bills are working out a deal with wide receiver Stevie Johnson right now, and might not be in the market to add more talent at wide receiver.
His teammates have vouched for him in the past, but for a team that is on the rise, taking a chance on a guy with known character issues may not be the wisest move.
Odds: Five percent
Miami Dolphins
3 of 4Why: Although it remains unclear what's left in the tank for Moss, adding another receiver would help take some of the attention off Brandon Marshall. The Dolphins may be looking to air it out a bit more under new head coach Joe Philbin, and Moss would give them another great red-zone target.
Why not: Taking a chance on a mercurial receiver like Moss sounds more like a move that a desperate head coach would make, not one to be made by a head coach in charge of a new regime. Teams in that position tend to want to look forward more than backward.
Odds: Less than five percent
New England Patriots
4 of 4Why: Now that Josh McDaniels is back with the team, one of Moss' best buddies and biggest supporters could lobby for the potential Hall of Fame receiver to make a return.
Tom Brady already knows Moss well, and the two wouldn't have to spend much time getting caught up with one another.
Why not: The way he left New England in the first place was a bad sign for any chances to return to the team. Not only did he call out the front office by saying they "don't pay," but he also reportedly had a blowout argument with former offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien in Week 4 of 2010.
The time away from football may have helped Moss clear his mind, but those problems didn't just vanish, either.
Odds: Less than two percent
