Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show: What We're Watching for in 2012
Every year for the past 137 years, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog show has graced the world and opened a new group of people to the wonders of canines.
With a limited number of entrants (just 2000 this year), this is the most prestigious of all dog shows and would equate to the dog Super Bowl. Overall, it’s a howling good time.
Where: Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY
When: Monday and Tuesday, February 13-14, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. ET
Watch: USA Network and CNBC
Live Stream: Westminster Kennel Club
What We’re Watching
New Breeds
With three new breeds allowed to enter this year’s event, the world will be able to get a good look at the Xoloitzcuintli, Entlebucher Mountain Dog and Cesky Terrier.
With new breeds come new expectations, so throwing the judges a curveball like this should be interesting to watch; especially if these are prefect specimens of those breeds.
Whether they win or not, getting the breed name out there will be enough to have people wanting one. Any time a dog gets a home, that’s a good thing.
Monday’s Fun
The Westminster website reported that all Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding breeds and varieties will be judged on Monday, with groups judged on Monday evening.
This is a wide variety of dogs, many of which have become popular in the United States. As a dog owner myself, it’s fun to see dogs of the same breed as mine and comparing how they match up (my dog always wins).
I know the Toy breed will be the highlight of Monday, with all of their funny haircuts and miniature statures. It will be fun to see.
Tuesday’s Fun
Tuesday is when the magic happens. Not only will all Sporting, Working, and Terrier breeds and varieties be judged on Tuesday, with groups judged on Tuesday evening, Best in Show will also be judged on Tuesday evening.
These are the breeds that have the storied histories of working in America and have become synonymous with the idea of American dogs. This is where the majority of Americans that have bigger dogs will find their breed.
Tuesday’s Best in Show speaks for itself. Should be a wild night.
