Stefon Diggs: 5-Star WR Recruit Commits to Maryland Terrapins
Five-star recruit Stefon Diggs had a lot of big-name programs to choose from come Friday.
In the end, he chose his hometown team, the Maryland Terrapins.
Tweeted Justin Hokanson of AuburnSports.com on Friday:
Diggs, who excelled as a receiver, running back and defensive back at Good Counsel, has the ability to be a game-changer for the Terrapins, who finished 2-10 last season after wideout Torrey Smith departed for the Baltimore Ravens.
Diggs' combination of speed and power is impressive. He has the ability to burst past cornerbacks and blow up defensive backs at the second level on offense, and deliver crushing blows on defense. Many expect him to be a receiver in college, where he could dominate with some work on his route running.
In that sense, Diggs could be a worthy successor to Smith and former Terrapin Darrius Heyward-Bey, who was selected No. 7 overall by the Oakland Raiders in the 2009 NFL draft.
Diggs' commitment to Maryland came as a bit of a surprise. He had offers from Florida, Ohio State and Auburn, with the opportunity to play for a big-time program with a history of success.
Then again, Diggs did say in high school that he would be teammates with Good Counsel running back and friend Wes Brown in college, per Rivals.com. Brown has also committed to Maryland.
Diggs' commitment is refreshing in a way. We've seen plenty of home products depart for bigger programs across the country. Diggs, who is a better recruit than Smith or Heyward-Bey ever were, has the potential to be a hometown hero.
Sometimes that trumps everything else.
