Stefon Diggs: Star Athlete Should Spurn Maryland for Auburn
The moment that college football fans, and a few coaches, have been waiting on for the last nine days is upon us. Star athlete Stefon Diggs will announce where he is going to play next season.
Speculation has been running rampant about where he is going to go. According to Josh Barr of the Washington Post, Diggs will announce that he is staying home to play at Maryland.
"All-Met Defensive Player of the Year Stefon Diggs of Good Counsel is poised to announce Friday that he will accept a scholarship offer to play for Maryland, according to a source with knowledge of Diggs’s plans.
"
Obviously, that would be a huge boon to an otherwise mediocre recruiting class for the Terps. But considering all the posturing and teasing Diggs has done up to this point, there is no reason to believe anything that we hear.
Of all the teams that he has been considering: Maryland, Ohio State, Florida and Auburn, the one he seems to be smitten with the most is Auburn.
Diggs and his family are very close to recruiter Trooper Taylor, who has been recruiting him throughout this process.
This is what Diggs had to say about the schools on his list yesterday:
If he already thinks of Auburn as a family, why wouldn't he go there? No offense to Maryland, but that school is not exactly brimming with elite players that will allow him to showcase his athletic ability at wide receiver.
Auburn is a team on the rise, after losing Cam Newton and Nick Fairley following the BCS championship win two years ago. There is talent on offense already, and the young defense will get better in 2012.
The Tigers are not far from competing with Alabama and LSU in the SEC again, and Diggs will be able to play in high-profile, nationally televised games each week. He won't get that playing in Maryland.
As great as the story of Diggs staying at home would be, it clearly sounds like he has taken his heart somewhere else. All we have to do is wait to find out what he actually wants to do.
