Tiger Woods: New Personality Must Come out in Pairing with Tony Romo
Whether he wins, comes in dead last, or finishes anywhere in between, Tiger Woods has a golden opportunity that he can't squander. This week is about public relations and showing some positive personality, which Woods has not done for a long time.
Woods has always been an aloof player. He put on a good face in commercials and interviews, but during the rounds Tiger was not an accessible player. He rarely acknowledged fans and was even mostly silent with his competitors, including some of his better friends.
That was all fine for a long time because he did put on that good face in commercials and he was so dominant, so advertisers flocked to him. While Woods wasn't always the greatest personality on the course, he didn't have anything detracting companies from using him as a spokesman.
Now he does and has had those problems ever since Thanksgiving of 2009. Advertisers have dropped him, his commercials are nowhere near as dominant and he's not playing well.
Playing with Tony Romo is a golden opportunity for Woods to show some personality to a largely new group of fans.
People who don't follow golf are going to watch this event to see people like Romo. As a person who has been to the AT&T multiple times but also tour events, I can tell you from first-hand experience that the live crowd is much different there. Sure, some people are there to see the golf, but others want to see the celebrities.
Romo is one of the celebrities that will be a draw to people. It would greatly benefit Tiger to be seen on television laughing and joking around with Romo between shots.
That may not seem like a lot, but being seen taking things a little less seriously would go a long way in getting more endorsements back.
Now that he's not as dominant of a golfer, Tiger is going to have to find other ways to make himself accessible to people looking to sponsor him.
Playing with Romo, the opportunity is there for Woods to show some personality. It is going to be really easy for him, he just needs to show a little more of a smile and less intensity. That is essential for playing this tournament, as the celebrities and their joking around dominate the action.
My suspicion is that Woods chose this tournament to make his 2012 PGA Tour debut so that he could show some personality. Remember that he hasn't played the AT&T since 2002.
The opportunity is a golden one. A few smiles and jokes in between shots would go a long way in making Woods look a lot better. It is a great opportunity that he needs to take full advantage of.
