2012 NFL Free Agent Predictions: Where Matt Flynn and Other Free Agent QBs Land

John RozumJun 7, 2018

Now that all 32 NFL teams are in full offseason mode, along with the 2012 NFL draft comes the free agent market.

And with 2011 proving to be a quarterback-dominated year with Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford all topping 5,000-plus yards, those potentially available look more appealing.

To that end, here is where some free-agent quarterbacks land this offseason.

Matt Flynn, Miami Dolphins

1 of 4

In an article by Mike Berardino of the Sun-Sentinel, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes that Matt Flynn will end up with the Miami Dolphins:

"

“I think it’s a strong possibility that [the Dolphins] would make a run at him,” Rodgers said during his weekly appearance on ESPN Milwaukee. “I think it kind of makes sense. Joe [Philbin] in that system, which I’m sure is going to be very similar to this system, and Matt having a great grasp of that and playing well in his recent opportunities. I think it would kind of make sense to bring Matt out there.”

"

With that said, it does feel like the perfect match as Flynn knows Philbin and the Dolphins do have great talent on offense.

Brandon Marshall proved in the Pro Bowl that he's still a stud No. 1 receiver, and tight end Anthony Fasano has developed even more as a reliable target. Add in running back Reggie Bush's late-season surge on the ground and Miami can make it work with Flynn.

The worst-case scenario would be that current Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore and Flynn battle for the starting role and make one another that much better. Then, whoever does get to start, coach Philbin knows he has a reliable backup.

This will definitely be an interesting situation, but with Philbin in Miami, Flynn to the 'Fins feels like a foregone conclusion.

Kyle Orton, Jacksonville Jaguars

Had Matt Cassel not gotten injured in 2011, it's unlikely that the Kansas City Chiefs would have come calling to Kyle Orton.

And with Cassel being the better quarterback anyway, he will retain that starting role in 2012—otherwise, what was the point of that trade with the Patriots?

As for Orton, the Jacksonville Jaguars make for a good fit as they are in desperate need of an NFL-experienced quarterback and can use their Top 10 pick to give him a solid receiving target.

Not to mention, Orton will have running back Maurice Jones-Drew and a stout defense to rely on, so airing the rock out all day won't be needed. When under center for Kansas City, we saw how well Orton can manage a game with a good defense and rush offense.

The same situation applies in Jacksonville, except the Jags have a top-10 defense and arguably the NFL's best and most complete running back. Let's put it this way, if Jacksonville can go 5-11 with Blaine Gabbert/Luke McCown at the helm, that's at least 8-8 or 9-7 with Orton.

Include an even more experienced defense with a Top 10 draft pick and 10-6 isn't out of the question.

Jason Campbell, Seattle Seahawks

With Carson Palmer, Kyle Boller and Terrelle Pryor, who knows what will happen with Jason Campbell's time in Oakland.

Fortunately for Campbell though, there are franchises who need a reliable quarterback, and when healthy, he proved his worth for the Raiders.

The Seattle Seahawks interestingly enough, have a similar offensive philosophy and aren't a bad option.

In Oakland, Campbell proved effective with a great running game behind him and some fast receivers. The Seahawks are eerily similar, except that Marshawn Lynch is just as good if not better, than Darren McFadden and Michael Bush.

Also, Seattle's receiving corps of Doug Baldwin, Golden Tate, Sidney Rice and Ben Obomanu are more reliable than anyone in Oakland. Now include the Seahawks sound defense and it's a much better situation for Campbell across the board.

As for Seattle's current quarterback situation, an article by Jerry Brewer of the Seattle Times validates that it's time for a change:

"

"The Seahawks just can't fool themselves into believing Jackson is the future. He's a wonderful person with great professionalism and more talent than the average temp. He defied low expectations and became a credible starting NFL quarterback. But the Seahawks lost six games that were close in the fourth quarter, and Jackson started five of those."

Rex Grossman, Arizona Cardinals

4 of 4

This offseason the Washington Redskins simply need to do everything is their power to land Baylor's Robert Griffin III in the 2012 NFL draft.

As for Rex Grossman, his inconsistency proved once again that a fresh start may be his only chance to be under center once again.

We've seen the good, bad and ugly from Grossman through his nine-year career, but he's never had a completion percentage above 58 percent.

Then again, he's never had a legitimately dominant receiver to target when being a starting quarterback.

That's where the Arizona Cardinals come in—Grossman would be a solid backup to Kevin Kolb for 2012. Now yes, there's also John Skelton, but his inconsistency in 2011 isn't enough to warrant a lock on being Kolb's backup.

At the very least, Grossman has experience and a strong enough arm to toss a few up to Larry Fitzgerald. If Kolb and/or Skelton don't pan out in 2012, Grossman's ability to shine on occasion will benefit greatly.

After all, Rex did sweep the Super Bowl champion New York Giants last season as well as best the Cardinals in Week 2.
