Stefon Diggs: Auburn Tigers Desperately Need 5-Star WR to Save Offense
Stefon Diggs, who is the highest-rated uncommitted recruit, is finally nearing his ultimate decision. Several programs are still in the running to land the 5-star wide receiver, but no team needs him more than the fading Auburn Tigers.
Charles Goldberg of the Birmingham News provides an update on the process:
"Stefon Diggs' whirlwind recruiting tour through big-time college football went through signing day and into overtime more than a week ago, but the five-star wide receiver and the top uncommitted player in the nation is finally going to end the suspense Friday night. (…)
Auburn has held a spot for Diggs and four-star offensive lineman Alex Kozan for more than a week beyond last Wednesday's National Signing Day.
"
The Tigers were already lacking playmakers on offense last season, only to receive word that stud running back Michael Dyer was transferring to Arkansas State. It was another big blow to a team just more than a year removed from a national title run.
Momentum, which is so important when it comes to building a successful college football program, seems to have started working against Auburn. That's why signing Diggs becomes vital to help save the team's offense.
He has the ability to make an impact right away because of his tremendous speed and can be used in several different ways, which will give the Tigers more offensive options.
Perhaps more importantly than the offense is how the signing will affect next year's recruiting. Getting Diggs to commit to Auburn over several other marquee schools should prove to future prospects that Auburn is still a premier destination.
Gene Chizik did a nice job of putting together a deep class that will address several of the team's issues from last season, but it lacks the star power Diggs would provide. For example, while the offensive line additions are huge, it's tough for the fanbase to get too pumped up over those signings.
Diggs, on the other hand, would be that one player fans can look at as a sign of good things to come. He's the dynamic playmaker they need to boost the offense back into respectable territory after ranking 70th in 2011.
Auburn just needs to hope holding a spot for Diggs pays off with his commitment on Friday.
