2012 NFL Free Agents: Why the San Diego Chargers Must Re-Sign Vincent Jackson
The San Diego Chargers have a lot of work to do this offseason as they attempt to rebound from a terribly disappointing 8-8 season. The first thing that must be addressed is the team's offensive line, which, thanks to injuries and a lack of depth, was horrendous in 2011. But San Diego also can't neglect the chance to retain its playmakers and first among those is wide receiver Vincent Jackson.
Jackson is probably San Diego's biggest offensive threat and his rapport with quarterback Philip Rivers is outstanding. Other than Calvin Johnson, I really don't think any receiver in the NFL possesses the physical gifts and playmaking ability that Jackson does. Unfortunately, several sources have indicated they don't believe the two-time Pro Bowler will be back with the Chargers next season.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
San Diego is unlikely to use its franchise tag on Jackson for the second year in a row, and while both sides are open to working out a long-term deal, the 29-year-old is expected to be in demand around the league.
General manager A.J. Smith has to get on this right now. Smith's job will likely depend on how the Chargers do next season, and while he often takes the approach that every player can be replaced, Jackson is a special case. There hasn't been a lot of good will between the two parties in the past and Smith needs to do what he can to squash that beef as soon as possible.
Jackson has spent all seven years of his career with the Chargers and he's been one of the league's top big-play threats for several years now. His career average of 17.5 yards per catch is remarkable and he has the ability to be both a deep threat and a possession receiver. That type of guy doesn't come along very often.
In 2011 Jackson hauled in 60 catches for 1,106 yards (18.4 yards per catch) and nine touchdowns. That kind of production is not easy to replace.
Smith should make re-signing Jackson priority No. 1 if he wants the Chargers to be a contender next season.
