2012 NFL Free Agents: Matt Flynn and Overvalued QB Busts

Eric BallJun 5, 2018

Quarterback-needy teams are like that desperate drunk guy at the bar during closing time. They just want some sort of girl to take home regardless of her personality/looks.

Just ask the Arizona Cardinals how they feel about the $21 million guaranteed money they owe Kevin Kolb.

This year there are plenty of drunk guys at the bar (Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, New York Jets?, Seattle Seahawks) looking for anything that is willing to go with them.

Here are the top-three free agents teams need to be avoiding like the plague:

1. Kyle Orton, Kansas City Chiefs

If Orton can’t beat out a QB in Tim Tebow, who failed to complete 50 percent of his passes, he’s not going to work for your team, bro!

Since Orton led the Broncos to a 6-0 record to start the 2009 season, he’s gone 6-22 as a starter. Orton has never had a QB rating over 87 and has a knack for turning over the ball at the most inopportune of times.

The Chiefs are the leaders in the clubhouse to re-sign him, which will guarantee a sub-.500 season in 2012.

2. Matt Flynn, Green Bay Packers

Like Kolb before him, everybody is intrigued by his potential to be a starter after playing one great game.

He was a seventh-round pick for a reason. There are plenty of question marks surrounding his accuracy and ability to run an offense. How will he adjust once there is a substantial amount of game film on him? Can he handle the pressure?

Nobody has a clue.

One sweet game doesn’t warrant $20 million in guaranteed money. It’s way too risky.

3. Alex Smith, San Francisco 49ers

I know, I know, he was just in the NFC Championship game, but that doesn’t mean a team should toss $12 million a year at him.

While his decision-making skills were off the charts this season, his accuracy issues are still a problem. He barely completed 50 percent of his passes during the regular season, and was a mere 12-of-26 against the Giants.

His ability to throw the ball deep is non-existent, and it’s just another limitation that makes you weary of building your franchise around him.

If anybody other than the 49ers sign him, they’ll be making a grave mistake.

Honorable mentions: Vince Young, Jason Campbell, Chad Henne.
