Mayweather vs Cotto: Why Fight Will Be Lopsided Snoozefest
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will easily handle Miguel Cotto and waltz out with another victory. This will only fuel everyone's desire for Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao.
It would be nice if that fight was happening now, but hey—you work with what you got. And in this instance, we have a very worthy opponent in Miguel Cotto.
While he may be worthy, it doesn't mean he is capable of beating Money.
Cotto's Slipping
Once upon a time, Cotto was an undefeated fighter at 32-0 and appeared to have the game to beat the likes of Pacquiao or Mayweather.
He was then in a brutal fight with Antonio Margarito and lost, and then was easily handled by Manny Pacquiao three fights later.
He has won his last three fights, but he is not the same explosive fighter he once was. Last fight, Cotto got revenge on Margarito, but it was not necessarily an impressive display of skill.
In that bout, he simply used his mobility to stay away from Margarito and then punished his damaged right eye until it forced the end of the fight.
There is no easy game plan in this fight that will lead him to victory.
Mayweather's Defense
This is the key in almost every Mayweather fight. His elite defense gives him the upper hand. One of Cotto's biggest assets is his ability to work the body of an opponent.
He can get inside and quickly pummel the interior of his opponent. This wears them down and leaves them open to big shots later.
Mayweather is almost impossible to trap, and he will not leave himself vulnerable to bruising stretches of body battery.
Prediction
Cotto is a determined and tough fighter. He has a strong chin, and he will not be knocked out. He also will never be a serious threat in this fight.
Mayweather wins in a unanimous decision.
