Fabio Capello Resigns: 5 Candidates to Be the Next England Coach

Bimersha GautamJun 7, 2018

Today, footballing forums all over are filled with one colossal news, that of the resignation of England manager Fabio Capello.

The FA statement read

"

The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager . . . The discussions focused on The FA Board’s decision to remove the England team captaincy from John Terry, and Fabio Capello’s response through an Italian broadcast interview.

"

The most plausible reason is that Fabio Capello might have believed that his authority had been undermined by the FA, and hence he had chosen to air his frustration on national TV once Terry was stripped of his captaincy.

In a meeting that lasted for over an hour between FA chairman David Bernstein, FA General Secretary Alex Horne and Fabio Capello at Wembley Stadium, Capello handed in a resignation that meant he would leave the post of England manager with immediate effect.

Now with Capello having spread shock-waves all over the footballing world, and at such a critical time before the Euros, which manager might fill in the void left by Fabio?

Let us examine.

5. Arsene Wenger

1 of 5

Although it looks like a far-fetched choice, England may be able to tempt Arsene Wenger in securing the lucrative position as England manager given his fall out with the Arsenal faithful.

Coupled with the Board's stronghold over transfer and wage policies, Arsene Wenger might just decide to move on to greener pastures.

He is a strong candidate with a great level of experience, and previous manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has tipped him to be the right man for the job

4. Guus Hiddink

If there is one manager that can turn fortunes around for almost any club and country he manages, it is certainly Guus Hiddink.

Having recently managed the Turkish national team, Guus Hiddink comes with a wealth of experience and a fantastic track record.

He has managed the Netherlands, South Korea, Australia and Russia over the last years with great levels of success

Currently Hiddink is not managing any club, and it might be the perfect time for him to take over the managerial position at England.

3. Jose Mourinho

He is another unlikely candidate, but with someone like Jose Mourinho, you can never be too predictable.

Although he would be considered a failure if he left Real Madrid without being able to end the reign of Barcelona's domination, the English job is quite a tempting offer

His move to Real Madrid has been riddled with controversy, especially the nature of recent El Clasicos. Furthermore, rumors are that there have been bust-ups between Mourinho and other key players, notably Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas.

He has always expressed a desire to return back to England. What better way to come back to England than by managing the national team?

2. Harry Redknapp

4 of 5

Harry Redknapp is possibly the strongest contender to be the next manager for England; however, it depends mostly on Redknapp.

"

"I've always said if you're an Englishman, it would be hard to turn it down, because it's the pinnacle of your career."

"

Although he has indeed expressed desire to manage England some day, the time for it might not be now. Tottenham Hotspur are flying high at the moment and are strong title contenders at this moment.

This presents Harry with a great quandary.

I do not see him taking the job, but I do expect the FA offering it to him.

1. Roy Hodgson

5 of 5

Despite having never won something of significant honor, Roy Hodgson has a wealth of experience.

He has managed sixteen different teams in eight countries, and led Fulham to the final of the Europa League, and also won five Swedish titles with Malmo.

Currently managing West Bromwich Albion, he led them to their best finish in over 30 years last season.

With Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Harry Redknapp all tied up, Roy Hodgson might be the most ideal candidate to manage the Three Lions for the Euro.
