Jardine and Joseph's Last Chance to Impact the Syracuse-Georgetown Rivalry

Daniel O'BrienJun 2, 2018

The Syracuse Orange and Georgetown Hoyas rivalry has produced some fantastic games during Kris Joseph and Scoop Jardine's careers.

Both Joseph and Jardine began as reserves for the Orange, glorified spectators of the great showdowns between John Thompson III and Jim Boeheim.

Once they got their feet wet, both became key players in the rivalry. Tonight they face Georgetown for the last time in their careers, barring a meeting in the Big East Tournament.

Syracuse's senior leaders have the opportunity to put a final stamp on their Hoya legacies.

The Early Years: Experiencing the rivalry

As a freshman in the 2007-2008 season, Jardine saw significant minutes for the Orange.

He wasn't too productive in his two games against Georgetown, but he was able to experience the intensity of the rivalry, including a near-upset that ended in an overtime loss to Roy Hibbert and company.

Jardine then redshirted the 2008-2009 season with a stress fracture, while Kris Joseph got his first taste of the rivalry as a freshman. This time, the Orange were on the winning side of an overtime game against the Hoyas. However, Joseph had little impact on either of the two meetings.

The Veteran Years: Taking matters into their own hands.

When the 2009-2010 season arrived, Joseph and Jardine were together for the first time and made a huge impact on the Syracuse-Georgetown series. The Johnny Flynn/Eric Dievendorf era was over, and it was time for two new faces to make their mark.

Scoop and Kris helped Syracuse win its two regular season meetings against the Hoyas, with Scoop being particularly productive against Georgetown's backcourt.

When the squads squared off again in the 2010 Big East Tournament quarterfinals, Jardine and Joseph chipped in a combined 37 points off the bench. Yet, it wasn't enough as the Hoyas knocked off the favored Orange.

Last year, the teams split the season series, highlighted by Jardine's 17 points and seven assists in a road win in Washington, D.C.

2012: Joseph and Jardine's last stand

Overall, Joseph and Jardine are 5-4 against Georgetown.

That's nice, but a win tonight would solidify their legacy in the rivalry. It would also give them the last laugh against Hoyas such as Hollis Thompson and Jason Clark, who they've played against for years.

The great Syracuse players find a way to beat Georgetown. Derrick Coleman rocked the Hoyas on Senior Day in 1990, Carmelo Anthony beat them three times in 2003 en route to a national title and Gerry McNamara toppled them on his way to the Big East title in 2006.

How will Kris Joseph and Scoop Jardine be remembered in the Syracuse vs. Georgetown record books?

Tonight is their golden opportunity to be rivalry heroes.
