Stefon Diggs Could Be a Program Changer for Maryland Terrapins
College football at the University of Maryland has not always been the main attraction, but Stefon Diggs can change that.
The 5-star athlete can be the second-best receiver in the country behind Dorial Green-Beckham, and he has the speed to be an even bigger playmaker at the college level.
At Good Counsel High School, Diggs played running back, wide receiver, cornerback and anywhere else the team needed him. Not surprisingly, he excelled everywhere on the field.
Diggs is incredibly quick and has the ability to score from anywhere on the field, but what uniform will he be wearing next season?
That is the question that has confused analysts for weeks. While most other top players made the biggest decision of their lives on national signing day, the Maryland native has decided to wait until next Friday to make his choice.
Since the recruiting process has been so secretive, it is unclear which teams are still among the finalists. Most believe the list is narrowed down to Auburn, California, Florida, Maryland, Ohio State and USC.
While most of these teams have had plenty of success on the field and in recruiting, Maryland is a team that stands out.
Comparatively, the Terrapins have not been anywhere near as fortunate. They have had good years, but the team has not had a 10-win season since 2003.
Stefon Diggs is not going to completely turn around a team that went 2-10 last season, but he will definitely have the program moving in the right direction.
The entire Washington D.C. area is a hotbed for talented players, but Maryland is usually unable to get the top athletes to remain close to home. Last week, defensive tackle Eddie Goldman and cornerback Ronald Darby each chose to attend Florida State, despite living less than a half hour from College Park.
It is not like the Terps have been completely missing talent over the past decade. Receivers Torrey Smith and Darrius Heyward-Bey are both making an impact in the NFL, but neither player was highly rated out of high school.
Diggs would not only help on the field, but it would also show talented local players that Maryland could be a great place to play.
Friend and teammate Wes Brown is already planning to play for the Terrapins next season. The running back was an Under Armour All-American, and the two said in an interview last year that they would be playing together in college.
Things change over time, but it is definitely going to play a part in his decision.
Maryland would also be perfect for his type of personality; it is a place where he can truly be the "big man on campus" from day one.
This school has been looking for a way to promote the football team and try to sell more tickets. Adding Diggs to a young roster will generate interest and turn the Terps into a winning team in a few years.
