Super Bowl Commercials 2012: Clint Eastwood Shouldn't Have to Defend Chrysler Ad
When sports and politics meet, only bad things can happen. Just ask Clint Eastwood, who is stuck trying to justify himself to Republicans after his Super Bowl ad.
One of the best-reviewed spots this year was a Chrysler spot with Clint Eastwood talking about the resolve of this country during one of the worst periods in the 236-year history of the United States. It was a moving two minutes that aimed to lift your spirits, but not everyone saw it that way.
Right-wing pundits took the while thing and misconstrued it, because everything is either Republican or Democrat—there is no in-between.

Here is what Eastwood, who is an outspoken Republican, told Ron Mitchell of Fox News about the backlash over the ad:
"I just want to say that the spin stops with you guys, and there is no spin in that ad. On this I am certain.
l am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. It was meant to be a message about just about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it. I thought the spirit was OK.
I am not supporting any politician at this time.
Chrysler to their credit didn’t even have cars in the ad.
Anything they gave me for it went for charity.
If...Obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it.
"
There were no political overtones to the spot. It was about us—all of us—and what we are doing to bring this country back to power. To make it a Republican or Democrat issue is completely absurd and shows just how paranoid the two sides are of each other right now.
If Eastwood were out there waving a blue flag and wearing a "Barack Obama 2012" t-shirt, then you can talk about politics. But let's just step back off our high horse and appreciate what the legendary filmmaker and Chrysler were able to create.
While other companies were content to use sex or cheap sight gags to shill their product, Chrysler showed one quick shot of its cars during the two-minute ad. The rest was about how we, as a society, are trying to get back on our feet.
Let's stop trying to search for something that isn't there and just appreciate what it was.
