Super Bowl Halftime Show 2012: MIA Middle Finger Will Destroy Future Acts

Adam WellsJun 2, 2018

When Madonna was announced as the performer for this year's Super Bowl Halftime show, there was some skepticism because of her racy past and how she would fit in with the toned down model the event had used in recent years. It turns out that the problem was not her, rather special-guest singer MIA.

During a rendition of Madonna's new song "Gimme All Your Luvin," which she and Nicki Minaj appear, MIA decided that it would be a good idea to stick up her middle finger for all of the country to see.

It has caused quite a stir, with the Parents Television Council taking aim at the NFL and NBC for allowing it to happen.

You know, because the league and network got together to figure out how they would be able to take the spotlight away from the game and have to deal with various legal groups along the way.

MIA's actions are going to ruin the Halftime Show from here on out. The league was already on high-alert after the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction in 2004. That is why you saw "older" acts like the Rolling Stones, The Who and Bruce Springsteen, among others, over the last eight years.

The league took a chance this year, because Madonna had toned down her act since the infamous Britney Spears kiss in 2003, and she held up her end of the bargain.

But MIA is going to change everything. No longer will fans get the chance to see anyone with a slight edge to their personality.

From here on out, we will see nothing but soft, conservative choices that are guaranteed to be on their best behavior. While there is nothing wrong with that, it's just too bad that one stupid, pointless action has to ruin everything that comes after it.

Of course, considering how bad the last two Halftime Shows have been with Madonna and the Black Eyed Peas, getting "safer" acts bring some life back into the event.

Since the Rolling Stones, the Who and Springsteen have already performed, there are not a lot of great, old school acts left for the NFL to use. Perhaps the NFL can let the Parents Television Council talk on-screen for 12 minutes about all the problems with the Halftime Show.
