Rickie Fowler: The Most Overrated Player on the PGA Tour

Ewan McQueenJun 7, 2018

Every year, every golfer on the PGA Tour believes it will be their year. This will be the moment they show the world what they are made of.

Come the end of the season, some will be happy with their year's work, but others will be disappointed at how they performed during the year.

There are many contenders who currently could take the top spot of the most overrated golfer on the PGA Tour.

Englishmen Luke Donald and Lee Westwood are rightly rated high by golf commentators, yet neither have won a Major, despite both being close on many occasions. Currently, they deserve to have the "overrated" tag around their neck.

But the most overrated player for me on the PGA currently is American Rickie Fowler.

Fowler has yet to win on Tour, but the 23 year old won the Rookie of the Year award for 2010.

The main reason why I feel Fowler is overrated is because he was a phenomenal amateur player—in fact he was arguably one of the best ever amateur golfers.

Between 2007-2008, Fowler was the number one amateur golfer for 36 weeks. He was instantly touted as a future Major champion by many pundits and tipped as one of the next big American golfers.

Indeed when he was still an amateur, he performed extremely well at the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines. After the first day, he was in a tie for seventh place and ended up playing all four days in the tournament, eventually finishing tied for 60th.

With a result like that, you would have expected Fowler to mount a challenge at his home major after turning professional in 2009, but in that year, and last year, Fowler failed to make the cut on both occasions.

Fowler's record in Major Championships is distinctly average at best. Last year, in his first appearance at The Masters, he ended in a lowly finish tied for 38th.

Two appearances at the PGA Championship have brought finishes of tied 58th and tied 51st.

Strangely, his best Major results, so far, have came at The Open Championship. In 2010, at St Andrews, he finished in a tie for 14th, and in last year's Open, he finished in a very impressive tie for fifth.

Those results prove that Fowler can compete with the very best. But his only win, so far in his professional career, has come at the Kolon Korea Open last year.

With all due respect, the field was hardly the strongest, with only Rory McIlroy and Y.E. Yang the real other notable names pitching up in Korea.

Fowler played really well over the four days to win by six shots ahead of McIlroy, but he hasn't yet done this on the PGA Tour.

Just this week he has missed the cut at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Yet, Fowler will be fairly heavily backed at the Masters, which is less than two months away.

Fowler certainly still has time on his side, and he proved at last year's Ryder Cup, with a superb comeback against Edoardo Molinari in the singles, that he is a very exciting player that can be too hot to handle.

But after a superb amateur career and some signs of great potential, it is almost unfathomable that he is still waiting for his first PGA Tour win (his best is four-second place finishes).

Forget non-major winners like Donald, Westwood and Sergio Garcia, rookie Rickie Fowler with his continually erratic performances is the most overrated player currently on the PGA Tour.
