WWE Summerslam 2003: Ranking the 6 Elimination Chamber Participants
We are just two short weeks away from the Elimination Chamber PPV event! Live from the great state of Wisconsin, it is sure to be an excellent show right before WrestleMania on April 1st, 2012.
Today, I will be looking back at SummerSlam 2003. The main event was, of course, an Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship. There were six competitors going for the Red Brand's top title, and it was quite a match!
6. Randy Orton
1 of 6I am a big fan of Randy Orton. He was my WWE Superstar of 2011 and has a great future ahead of him. That being said, he had no reason to be in this match back in 2003.
He was there to help Triple H retain the title, but he never did anything of note. Thus, that entire story was pointless in the end.
He was defeated due to a Spear by Goldberg and sent to the back. Yes, a Spear!
5. Kevin Nash
2 of 6Fresh off a new haircut, Kevin Nash was the wild card in this match. It ended up being his final WWE PPV for many years, but he certainly made the most of it.
He was eliminated early, but he caused a ton of damage. He may have not done much, but he left with a lot of steam. Nice showing here by Nash!
4. Shawn Michaels
3 of 6Shawn Michaels began the match. Outside of that, he did not do anything of note.
Even with another fine performance, I never felt HBK had a chance to win. It is very hard to get into a certain wrestler when you know they are not going to win. That was Michaels here in 2003.
He was always going to put on an amazing show, but winning the World Title? No.
3. Triple H
4 of 6Triple H was reigning World Heavyweight Champion.
He came into this match injured, so he did not do much physical work. That was expected, so I can't hold that against him here.
Again, he did not do very much in this match, but the fact is he won. He retained his title and left with the gold in his possession. Not much needs to be added...
2. Chris Jericho
5 of 6Chris Jericho gets a high ranking just for the video above.
Yes, Y2J entered early. Yes, Jericho was great at SummerSlam 2003. Yes, he had a very outside chance of winning this match. Yes, he lasted a decent amount in this match. In the end, it didn't matter.
The highlight of him being speared though the glass pod will forever be in WWE video packages. Outstanding job, Jericho!
1. Bill Goldberg
6 of 6Bill Goldberg had never been beaten in his WWE run. He had beat every single man on the roster and was next in line for a World Title match. It seemed as if his moment was coming on this night...
Except it had to wait one more month.
Goldberg eliminated Orton, Jericho and Michaels all in only a few minutes. All that stood in his way was Triple H! Sadly, Ric Flair had other ideas, as he helped his Evolution member retain the title.
Triple H did very little work, but he found a way to hand Goldberg his first loss in WWE. What a shocking ending to a very entertaining match! Goldberg may not have won the gold until the following month, but he was certainly the star of this main event.
