UFC 143 Results: Roy "Big Country" Nelson Needs Win over Fabricio Werdum

There is no better representation of the everyman fighter in the UFC than Roy "Big Country" Nelson. The star has continued to look strong, despite having the same physique as Norm from Cheers.

While that has endeared him to the fans, it cost him the fight against Frank Mir. That’s why Nelson needs this win over Fabricio Werdum more than any other win in his career.

Coming off a win against MMA legend Mirko Cro Cop, Big Country has shaken off his two straight losses by decision against Mir and Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos.

Nelson is looking for further redemption against Werdum.

Despite being the underdog and facing a slimmer version of Nelson, Werdum talked to Bleacher Report about how it’s anyone’s fight:

Roy is a great fighter with a really strong right hand. He's also dangerous because he has a good ground game. I think the fight will be really amazing and something for the fans to truly enjoy. As far as advantages go, I don't think they exist in mixed martial arts anymore. There are no more easy fights, especially with the way the heavyweight division has recently evolved.

"

That sounds like the words of a fighter that is trying not to give their opponent another reason to knock them out. Werdum fears Big Country’s right hand.

With a chin that will not quit, Nelson will use his greatly improved cardio to make sure he knocks out Werdum within the first two rounds. If it does go to the ground, expect improvements from a man that was exposed by Mir.

Nelson has built a cult following in the UFC, and another win would start his ascension back to title contention. People would fall back in love with this guy; he has a great personality.

The top contender for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, Alistair Overeem, beat Werdum last June by unanimous decision. If Nelson beats Werdum, it will be another step towards heavyweight glory for Big Country.
