Super Bowl Commercials 2012: Ad Concepts That Need to Make a Comeback

Mike ChiariFeb 3, 2012

Perhaps as much as the Super Bowl itself, viewers eagerly anticipate the new and creative commercials that will be shown. While newer is sometimes better, there is nothing wrong with a little bit of nostalgia when it comes to trying to peddle a product.

Since so many people still remember the commercials of years past, it's quite surprising that some of these companies don't attempt to reprise said ads. Here are three commercial concepts that the general public would love to see make a comeback in 2012, or at least in the near future.

Career Builder Monkeys

There are a few things that essentially create a can't-miss commercial. The most obvious, though, is the presence of monkeys. Career Builder fully understood that as it began to incorporate the primates into its commercials several years ago. Dressing monkeys in business attire is also a huge hit, so Career Builder had it covered from all angles.

The monkeys haven't been around in quite some time, however, and Career Builder hasn't produced anything of note during that time frame either. Getting that many monkeys together is probably pretty costly, but there is no reason to mess with what works. The American public wants to see football on Sunday, but they also want to see monkeys.

Budweiser Frogs

In 1995, Budweiser put itself on the map in terms of top-notch Super Bowl ads. The concept was quite simple as it featured three frogs croaking to form the word "Budweiser." There wasn't anything inherently exciting or groundbreaking about the commercial, but the viewers certainly took to it and it became an iconic part of Bud's advertising.

Budweiser made the switch to commercials featuring Clydesdales over the past several years. While the Clydesdales have had some classic moments in their own right, they don't quite measure up to the frogs. Budweiser usually has a couple of ads per Super Bowl, so there is no reason why the company can't keep the Clydesdales and bring back the frogs. In fact, they can even do it in the same commercial.

Terry Tate: Office Linebacker

There are people who watch the Super Bowl simply for the game and there are others who only watch for the commercials. Reebok's Terry Tate: Office Linebacker commercials appealed to every demographic. The ads basically involved Tate acting as an enforcer in the work place. If he saw somebody not following protocol, man or woman, he would pound them with a devastating tackle.

Reebok is losing their merchandising rights with the NFL to Nike following this season, so it would behooves them to make a big splash. Office Linebacker is on pretty much any list out there that counts down the best Super Bowl advertisements of all time. Tate has hung up the jersey for long enough. It's time for him to come out of retirement.
