Ohio State Football: Why Urban Meyer Has Already Changed Big Ten Coaching

Tim BielikJun 7, 2018

The first two months of Urban Meyer's tenure as the head coach at Ohio State has been nothing short of stunning.

He hasn't coached one single practice at Ohio State, and he has already single-handedly changed the culture of Buckeyes football after the Tressel-tattoo scandal.

Meyer has brought in a top-five recruiting class in shocking fashion, revamping a defense that looked pedestrian and rebuilding a porous offensive line.

In short, he is picking up where he left off at Florida, which has rubbed some coaches in the Big Ten the wrong way, namely Bret Bielema.

The Wisconsin coach believes that Meyer has taken part in some sort of illegal recruiting practice in the last few months and has urged Athletic Director Barry Alvarez to talk to Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany on the subject.

Regardless of the reasoning, whether it be part of the mythical "gentlemen's agreement" when it comes to Big Ten recruiting or a case of sour grapes, this is a very bizarre situation.

Now, this is not the first time Bielema has said something in such a polarized vacuum.

But it does beg the question about whether or not this "gentlemen's agreement" is an outdated concept or something tangible.

The truth is that Meyer only knows how to coach one way: with calculated aggression.

That type of drive is going to create problems with his peers, as it has done already with Bielema and Michigan State's Mark Dantonio.

More than anything, it will force the other coaches in the Big Ten to have to adapt and become more aggressive.

The game has changed, and the Big Ten every year looks more and more behind when it comes to competing with the SEC.

That doesn't mean the Big Ten needs to become the SEC North, but there are enough good coaches in the conference to make it stronger than it is.

Brady Hoke has done a great job getting Michigan back on track and, ironically enough, it seems like he is more fine with Meyer at OSU than Bielema.

In the end, recruiting is a nasty game and the motto of the game has always been, "Fortune favors the bold."

The Big Ten needs to find a way to get stronger, and sometimes getting stronger involves a little extra motivation.

Urban Meyer's presence may be that push.

While it's very unlikely much comes out of Bielema's accusations, this much is true: Coaching in the Big Ten is never going to be the same.

The rule is quickly becoming to work harder or the school will find someone to do it better.

As for the "gentlemen's agreement," expect this to become a thing of the past.
