USC Football Recruiting: Predicting Biggest Stars out of 2012 Class

Joshua CarrollJun 7, 2018

National championship-bound USC has once again put together another great recruiting class despite limitations.

Lane Kiffin succeeded in filling all the voids left open by transfers or players moving on to the NFL, and he also added more weapons to an already talented team.

Some players more than others are poised for greatness in a Trojan uniform, and I'm here to tell you who.

These kids have a chance to leave their imprints on USC football sooner rather than later and are some of most sought-after recruits in the nation.

WR Nelson Agholor

1 of 6

Tampa, Florida high school football star Nelson Agholor is one of the top athletes in the nation. He possesses an amazing ability to make people miss, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was looked to as a punt returner very early in his career at USC.

He is not the biggest receiver you will see out there on the field, but neither are Marquise Lee and Robert Woods.

Lane Kiffin knows what he likes, and he likes these players with the ability to make a big play every time they step on the field.

A 5-star recruit, Agholor ended up narrowing down his choices between USC, Notre Dame and the Florida Gators.

Not only did the Irish fail to obtain this 5-star recruit, but now they have to play against him down the road.

OL Zach Banner/Jordan Simmons

USC Offensive lineman Matt Kalil is projected to be a top three pick in this year's NFL draft. Needless to say, he left a void on the offensive line that needed to be filled.

Lane Kiffin succeeded in adding offensive linemen Zach Banner and Jordan Simmons.

Banner is 6'9", 320 pounds and is a force to be reckoned with both on the field and on the basketball court.  He plans to continue to play both sports at USC, though where he is truly expected to shine and thrive is on the gridiron.

He has a good chance of earning a key starting role protecting premier quarterback Matt Barkley as a freshmen, just like offensive lineman Marcus Martin did last year.

Kiffin will play whoever can get the job done.

Nevertheless, Banner will be competing for the position with Simmons, who stands at 6'5" 325 pounds. He possesses an amazing combination of mobility and strength and labeled a "terrific athlete" by his high school coach.

Should be an interesting battle for that vacant spot, but whoever wins out will be deserving and fit to get the job done.

DE Leonard Williams

Defensive end Nick Perry also left to the NFL draft, which made it very important for Kiffin to bring in some marquee pass-rushers and run-stoppers.

Williams is ranked as "one of the top defensive ends in the country" despite being only a 4-star recruit and was one of the Trojan's most impressive signings.

Look for him to get into the flow of things right off the bat, as the 6'5", 254-pounder came to USC to play right away.

He chose the Trojans over two local universities, Florida and Florida State, because SC plays a defense that employs two defensive ends.

WR Darreus Rogers

4 of 6

Darreus Rogers was reportedly torn between Arizona State University and USC until the last second.

At the end of the day, the 4-star receiver chose to become a Trojan and will have an immediate impact.

Look for him to line up in the slot position, especially with the loss of receiver Kyle Prater, alongside Robert Woods and Marquise Lee.

This should free him up for a lot of easy catches, and once he has the ball in his hands, he is one extremely explosive player.

Should be one of the most immediately influential players in this 2012 class.

TE Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick

5 of 6

Although the Trojans have two tight ends coming off good seasons in Xavier Gremble and Randall Telfer, TE Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick was a good pick up for USC.

However, as far as his career goes as a Trojan, it is not likely that he will continue to play TE.

There have been reports of him being moved to either the defensive or offensive line, as standing at 6'5" 250 pounds, he's clearly a big boy.

As for his first season at USC, it is likely he will redshirt, but keep a lookout for him later on.

CB Devian Shelton

6 of 6

USC kept an eye on Shelton from afar for a very long time, but it took them until the last second to offer him a scholarship.

But when they did, he jumped at the opportunity and is now considered part of the USC recruiting class of 2012.

He played both cornerback and safety in high school, and many coaches could see him at both positions.

Yet, as a USC recruit, he is being placed in an already talented core of defensive backs.

He will not have an immediate impact on the Trojans' upcoming season, but he's another speedy and smart player who will continue to improve in practice until it's his time to shine.
