Carlos Tevez's Top 10 Most Annoying Moments
There's no getting around it: Carlos Tevez is annoying.
Sure, he's a solid footballer, but when it comes to annoying fans—those of the opposition and otherwise—he just can't get out of his own way. From being owned by a third-party group to being associated with super-agent Kia Joorabchian, Tevez has a bunch of factors working against him.
But those aren't even specific moments, and that's why we've left them out.
No matter—Tevez still has plenty of material to fill out a top-10 list of his most annoying moments.
Refusing to Play, Pt. I
1 of 10Maybe we should have seen Tevez coming a long time ago.
In August 2006, the 22-year-old Tevez refused to play for Brazilian club Corinthians, with whom he had won a league title in 2005.
But he didn't just refuse to play. He brought the crazy in the process.
“It’s like they don’t want an Argentine to succeed in Brazilian soccer," he said. "If nothing changes, I think it will be difficult for me to stay.”
Joining West Ham
2 of 10That Tevez and Javier Mascherano joined West Ham in 2006 was surprising, but the move itself was not annoying.
What was annoying was that Tevez and Mascherano were both owned by a third-party group—leading to questions about ethics and fairness.
It was so annoying that the practice was later banned in England.
FIFA has also done so, and UEFA is currently considering a move to ban such players from playing in the Champions League.
Keeping West Ham in the Premiership
3 of 10Tevez scored the winner as West Ham beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on the final day of the 2006-07 season.
The victory kept West Ham in the Premier League at the expense of Sheffield United.
A few weeks earlier, West Ham had been punished for breaking Premier League rules over third-party ownership. But Tevez was still allowed to play.
West Ham and Sheffield United later settled their dispute out of court for ₤21 million.
Sulking at West Ham
4 of 10In November 2006, Tevez earned the ire of West Ham manager Alan Pardew by "storming out" of Upton Park after being substituted out of a match.
As part of Tevez's punishment, his teammates decided the Argentine would have to train in a Brazil jersey for two weeks.
War of Words with Fergie
5 of 10Tevez moved to Manchester United in 2007. In 2008, he said:
"“I cannot ever imagine leaving United. My relationship with the club is perfect. Patrice Evra is my closest friend, but the feeling I get from all the players is something I’ve not experienced before. I want to get the contract sorted and play for United for the rest of my career.”
"
Tevez joined Manchester City in 2009, but not before he engaged Sir Alex Ferguson in an epic war of words.
""The first thing United's fans have to understand is that a part of my heart will always be with them," Tevez said. "They were very supportive and they always made me feel good even when I wasn't playing, so I will always keep that in my heart.
"The second point is that the reason I did not stay at United was nothing to do with the fans. It was because Alex Ferguson and David Gill did not want to keep me there."
"
Of course, the love affair wouldn't last with City, either…
City Transfer Request
6 of 10In fact, the love affair really lasted only until 2010.
That's when Tevez issued his first transfer request with Manchester City.
Much like the dispute with United, Tevez conducted himself during the first City dispute in a classy, professional manner.
Per BBC News:
"City's hierarchy have pointed the finger at Iranian businessman Joorabchian, describing his actions in relation to Tevez's situation as "disappointing."
But the player himself stated: "I hugely resent suggestions that I have been unduly influenced by others. I wanted to leave in the summer but was convinced to return. Sadly, my feelings have not changed.
"I am disappointed that the management should now see fit to try to portray the situation in another light.
"My relationship with certain executives and individuals at the club has broken down and is now beyond repair. I do not wish to expand on this at this stage. They know, because I have told them."
"
It only got worse.
Complaining About Manchester
7 of 10Not long after leading City to the FA Cup in May 2011, Tevez made an about-face and launched a mystifying attack on the city of Manchester itself.
"Tevez said: “There is nothing to do in Manchester. The weather, everything. It has nothing and the problem is I’m still speaking very poor English.
“When I finish my contract, I will not return to Manchester ever, not even on holiday. Not for anything.’’
Tevez talked about being homesick last year and said at the time: “I have the idea of quitting in my mind. I have been playing in England for five years and have not spent one single Christmas or New Year with my family.
“Let me tell you, I am not enjoying the life of a footballer.”
"
Here's a good version of the whole video, complete with English translation.
Refusing to Play, Pt. II
8 of 10This must be the most well-documented story of the 2011-12 season.
First, Tevez refused to play as a substitute against Bayern Munich.
Roberto Mancini declared Tevez done at City. The papers had a field day.
Then, Tevez denied it all. And he refused to apologize.
It sparked the ensuing saga, which has become so ridiculous that even Tevez is calling it "comical."
Kicking out at an Opponent
9 of 10Wayne Rooney gets a lot of bad publicity in the English press for his temper tantrums.
Maybe Tevez should, too.
Tevez was sent off during a World Cup 2010 qualifying match between Argentina and Colombia in 2007.
The reason: Kicking out at an opponent.
