Stefon Diggs: Power Ranking 5-Star WR's Best Available Options

Tim DanielsJun 5, 2018

As expected, Stefon Diggs didn't make a decision on National Signing Day, which leaves him as the top-ranked recruit still on the board. It looks like there will be a three-team race to sign the stud wide receiver, who Rivals gives a full five-star rating.

Here are Diggs' best options, based on the three teams expected to be most heavily involved in making a late push to sign him. California and Maryland just missed the cut.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

Urban Meyer returned to the college coaching ranks with a bang. He brought a top-five class to Columbus despite limited time to confirm old commitments and receive new ones. There is still a void at wide receiver, though.

Braxton Miller will need more weapons at his disposal if he's ever going to reach his sky-high potential. Michael Thomas is the only four-star wideout to commit to Ohio State for this class, but he likely won't be able to contribute right away like Diggs would.

Something special is starting to develop at Ohio State, so Diggs would benefit from jumping on the train now before it passes him by.

2. Florida Gators

Florida made a bunch of terrific additions during Will Muschamp's first complete recruiting cycle, which signals the program is in good hands after the aforementioned Meyer stepped aside then bolted. None of the big names they added were wide receivers, however.

The Gators have become known for their dynamic playmakers at the skill positions, but there was a lull last season. Other than Chris Rainey, there wasn't the usual amount of firepower for Florida. That means there should be immediate playing time available for Diggs.

It's kind of funny how often Florida and Ohio State have matched up, both on the field in a bowl game and on the recruiting trail, since Meyer became the Buckeyes coach. One team could get a leg up by landing Diggs.

3. Auburn Tigers

The Tigers are a dark horse, but are still in the running for Diggs. Just like the other two teams on this list, they have a need on the outside that must be fixed before they are SEC contenders once again. That's something they hope will be sooner rather than later.

Fellow wideouts Ricardo Louis and JaQuay Williams have already been signed, though. Add to the fact that last year's leading receiver Emory Blake will only be a junior next season, and Diggs wouldn't have such a clear path to playing time at Auburn.

Competition isn't always a bad thing, but if he's waited this long to make a choice it means he's looking for the perfect opportunity. The Tigers will need to guarantee that to him to finish the deal.
