National Signing Day 2012: Top Recruits That Will Shake Up College Football

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

The most important day in college football has come and gone, with national signing day being more unpredictable than the NFL draft. The surprises started early and kept coming as the announcements were made. These moves will have a ripple effect on college football right away, shifting the balance of power in the power conferences.

There are still some big fish that have yet to make their decisions, but for the most part the best players are signed, sealed and delivered.

While the celebrations will continue until the regular season starts, it is never too early to look at the moves that will have a profound impact on college football right away.

WR Dorial Green-Beckham to Missouri

The prevailing theory all along was that Green-Beckham was going to Arkansas. There were whispers about him going to Missouri last week, but they were quickly shot down by his father.

Well, it turns out those whispers were right. Now, the Tigers head into the SEC with the best wide receiver and top playmaker from this year's recruiting class.

At 6'6" and 220 pounds, he is certainly capable of handling his own against the physical cornerbacks in the SEC. There will be a period of adjustment for him and the team, but the future of the Tigers looks much brighter today than it did 24 hours ago.

2012 Prediction: Missouri: 8-4, Green-Beckham: 47 receptions, 625 yards, six touchdowns

DE Mario Williams to Florida State

Wednesday was a banner day for Jimbo Fisher and his staff. They got the perfect mix of high-end talent and quality depth, but the biggest sign was stud defensive end Mario Williams.

Not to be confused with that guy who plays for the Houston Texans, Williams had already committed to the Seminoles months ago but was keeping his options open until the last possible minute.

He was the No. 1 ranked player on the ESPNU 150 list thanks to his size, big body and quick first step that allows him to run over offensive linemen.

The ACC is going to be Florida State's conference very soon, and Williams will be a big part of that rise back to prominence.

2012 Prediction: Florida State: 10-2, Williams: Six sacks and 14 tackles for loss

WR Deontay Greenberry to Houston

This move is more bout where Greenberry didn't go than where he did go. That's not to say there is anything wrong with Houston, but Brian Kelly and Notre Dame thought they had him in the bag. He was going to form an excellent battery with incoming quarterback Gunner Kiel.

Instead, Greenberry decided that he didn't want to play in South Bend. The Cougars were more than happy to snatch him up, and they will be in a good position to make the transition to the Big East, which takes effect after this season.

New Cougars head coach Tony Levine will inherit a good program from Kevin Sumlin, and his first recruiting class is a sign that there will not be any significant drop-off.

2012 Prediction: Houston: 8-4, Greenberry: 40 receptions, 575 yards and three touchdowns
