National Signing Day 2012: Most Surprising Decisions on High School Holiday
National signing day has passed, but with it came huge shocks, and not every star-studded high school athlete has signed yet, so more could be on the way.
Those that wait to announce on national signing day want the spotlight that comes along with it. Whether they bring in props or pick from hats, all the attention is on them and they love it.
The recruits that make last-minute flips or choose a team nobody expected end up getting talked about more, simply because the choice they made blew the minds of many.
With that said, here are some of the most surprising decisions on national signing day.
Dorial Green-Beckham picks whom?
The nation's No. 1 recruit went against most people's predictions and chose to stay in state and play for Gary Pinkel and the Missouri Tigers.
Yes, there were conflicting reports on Monday that stated Green-Beckham would indeed pick Missouri. A reporter said he was headed there, but then Green-Beckham's father later denied it. That denial is why so many people believed the 6'6", 220-pound wide receiver would pick the Arkansas Razorbacks.
It may not have been a surprise to some people (most likely Tigers fans), but it was still a shocking decision to see him put on a Missouri hat. The Tigers were easily the one school in his list of five that wasn't a powerhouse, which is why it was a bombshell when he made his decision.
Deontay Greenberry de-commits, say what?!?
Regarded as Mr. Football, Deontay Greenberry is a big 4-star wide receiver that was expected to be a huge addition to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Listed at 6'3", 185 pounds, the hope was that Greenberry would step in right away and help make up for the loss of Michael Floyd.
However, on national signing day Greenberry did the unthinkable and flip-flopped his decision from the Fighting Irish to Houston.
Greenberry spurned a national powerhouse for a smaller school, which is extremely mind-boggling. What makes matters worse is the fact he had been committed to Notre Dame for several months.
The last-minute decision was a huge shock, and it outraged many Fighting Irish fans. Some were quick to dump him, though, as they believed he will be lost on a Conference USA team. He'll only be in that conference for one season, though, because the Houston Cougars are expected to play in the Big East (or newly named conference) in 2013.
Jordan Payton plays musical schools
Sometimes a recruit will verbally commit to school well before he is truly ready. As for 4-star wide receiver Jordan Payton, he fell victim to this not once, not twice, but three times.
Payton committed to USC, changed his mind to Cal, then flipped to Washington. He did this twice on television, only to surprise everyone once again and commit to UCLA on national signing day.
It was a very strange course of events, and probably one people should have seen coming. Then again, after changing his mind that much you had to think he had finally made the right decision when he chose Washington.
Perhaps the city of Los Angeles enticed him so much he made the switch at the last minute. Whatever it was, Payton gave college football fans an interesting recruiting process to watch, as it's one people definitely won't forget.
In being so indecisive, Payton hurt multiple teams because they wasted time on him, which caused them to miss out on other good players.
