Floyd Mayweather: Fighting Manny Pacquiao Shouldn't Be About Money

Jeff ChaseJun 7, 2018

While we were all looking forward to the possibility that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao were finally going to fight, we were all deeply saddened to hear that it will be Miguel Cotto who will be taking on Mayweather instead.

With these two fighters, there is always going to be some ridiculous issue that keeps them from getting into a ring together. At one point, it was all about drug testing.

When the two were about to fight back in 2009, Mayweather wanted Pac-Man to take a drug test to prove that he wasn't taking PEDs. This caused an rift between the two fighters, which obviously led to the demise of the potential fight.

This time around, it seems like the issue is about the revenue sharing.

According to a report by the Associated Press, Mayweather had this to say about this situation between him and Pacquiao, and why he chose to fight Cotto:

"

"I presented Pacquiao with the fight," Mayweather said after meeting with the Nevada commission. "Pacquiao is blowing a lot of smoke. ... He doesn't really want to fight. I gave him a chance to step up to the plate. We're talking about a $10 million fighter that I tried to give $40 million to. We didn't even talk about the back end."

"

This whole time there has been an issue about the money. Mayweather believing he deserved a greater amount of the share, while many argued that it should be split even as both fighters would attract a lot of attention.

It just seems like every time these two get close to fighting, Mayweather pulls out a card that will put Pacquiao in a position where he just would have to say no.

Mayweather believes that he is the best, and if he wants to prove just that, he has to take on Pacquiao. He can't keep fighting these other boxers while avoiding what will either make or break his career.

It will always be about money, as that is just the nature of things. But when we are talking about two fighters who are considered the best, financial benefits need to be put aside so we can just watch history finally be settled.

No matter how the revenue would be split, there is no doubt that both men would likely make a ton of money on perhaps one of the greatest matches of all time.
