Super Bowl 2012: Halftime Show Already a Flop

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

What person decided Madonna was the best choice for halftime performer at the Super Bowl? Did they not realize this was a football game and not a fashion show?

Madonna hasn't been a credible halftime performer for the Super Bowl since before she talked in an British accent.

Now she is 53 years old and waging a losing battle to stay relevant. At least she can take comfort in the fact that she has fooled one powerful planning committee into believing she is succeeding in this quest.

The problem here is that she is doomed to failure. Madonna was never a performer that used a great voice to succeed. She was all about image, outfits and motionless "voguing" dance moves.

Now no one cares what she wears or what dance moves she can pull off without breaking a hip.

In fact, Vogue is probably the last hit she had that most people would be able to cite. There will be no interest in hearing her newer songs, and who wants to hear this aging diva sing songs like Material Girl or Like a Virgin?

The Super Bowl is not a good vehicle for Madonna to launch a comeback. People are going to be rushing to change the channel. The only people left watching will be the ones trying to catch a glimpse of something in her performance that they can make fun of.

How did the people in charge of booking the halftime act not realize this?

When employing their go-to tactic of hiring aging acts, it is important that the Super Bowl sticks to rock and roll.

While these guys may be well past their prime as well, it is far easier for them to recapture the magic in the live setting in a group setting with songs that speak for themselves. And not songs that survived by being trendy fashion statements by a sex symbol.
