Floyd Mayweather: Why Boxing's Consolation Fight Will Disappoint

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

After talks broke down between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao (again), we are left with Mayweather vs. Miguel Cotto in May.

Before Mayweather serves his 87-day jail sentence for misdemeanor battery in June, he will fight Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

It's not that this is a bad fight—far from it. Mayweather is undefeated at 41-0 and Cotto has only lost twice in his career (once against Pacquiao).

Still, we know who's going to win this fight. Mayweather isn't called a top-two boxer for nothing. His blend of power, speed and counter-punching ability is second to none, and regardless of the controversial decision against Victor Ortiz, we all know he was going to win anyway.

One thing we do know about Cotto is that he's not invincible. His losses against Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito are proof of that.

We all know who is going to win this fight, which is why any fight Mayweather or Pacquiao take that isn't Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will be a disappointment. It's pretty clear by now that the only boxer on the planet who has the ability to defeat Mayweather is Pacquiao, and camps continue to fight amongst each other instead of giving the public what it wants.

This is why the UFC has burst past boxing—the UFC gives fans what they want, while boxing largely doesn't. People will show up for this fight, there's no doubt. And there will be some interest. But it's not who the public mainly wants to see, and we've been down this road for the last few years.

Even if Mayweather vs. Cotto turns out to be a thriller, a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would exceed its electricity tenfold.

Mayweather vs. Cotto may be a good fight, but it was disappointing from the start because we didn't get to see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.
