Stefon Diggs: Why Maryland Needs 5-Star WR the Most

Jun 6, 2018

Many of the country's top recruits finally announced where they will be playing their college ball on Wednesday.

Not Stefon Diggs. The 5-star wide receiver out of Olney, Md. revealed last week that he's going to wait until Feb. 10. He still has some serious thinking to do.

Diggs also has one more visit to make. According to MaxPreps.com, Diggs will pay a visit to the University of Maryland this weekend. It will be his fifth and final visit.

The Terrapins are probably hoping that Diggs' trip to Maryland has the same effect that Dorial Green-Beckham's last-minute trip to Missouri had. Green-Beckham paid a visit to Missouri last Friday, and committed to the Tigers on Wednesday (see USA Today report). It's hard to chalk something like that up to simple coincidence.

The Terrapins also happen to be on the lookout for their next great wide receiver. The program has churned out greats like Darrius Heyward-Bey and Torrey Smith in recent years, but its 2012 recruiting class is a little lacking at the wide receiver position. The same was true of last year's recruiting class.

Securing Diggs' commitment would signal a significant reversal of fortune. Diggs is not a pure wide receiver in the sense that he served a variety of roles for Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, but he does have the top-end speed and other skills to be a legitimate playmaker at the wide receiver position is he is transitioned there on a full-time basis.

If you ask Rivals.com, Diggs could even be the next DeSean Jackson. That's high praise.

There are other schools in the mix for Diggs, of course. He's already paid official visits to Cal, Auburn, Florida and Ohio State, and all four of them would no doubt like nothing more than to see Diggs' signature on a letter of intent.

But while these teams want Diggs, they don't really need him. Florida and Ohio State are No. 3 and No. 4 in Rivals' team rankings, respectively. Auburn's No. 11, and Cal is still within the top 30 even despite the program's limp to the finish line.

Maryland is not in the top 50, and is No. 7 in the ACC. If the Terrapins were to get Diggs, it would not be a case of the rich getting richer. It would be a case of a needy team filling a need.

Knowledge of this will not, or at least should not, influence Diggs' decision. It's not his responsibility to do a program a favor. It's his responsibility to make the best decision for himself.

But if he chooses Maryland, the Terrapins won't complain.
