National Signing Day 2012: Biggest Losers from Massively Important Day
California's recruiting class went from promising to a disaster, and that fact was punctuated on signing day.
This was a big blow to the Cal program. They weren't the only ones that came away from signing day as losers. Here are the three biggest losers from this recruiting season.
California
Not that long ago, the Golden Bears were well on their way to a top 10 recruiting class. That was before they started hemorrhaging their top recruits.
Their class started to crumble when defensive line coach and recruiter extraordinaire Tosh Lupoi was hired away by Washington.
Since then they lost highly touted prospects S Shaq Thompson and WR Jordan Payton to Washington. They also lost OT Arik Armstead to Oregon and DT Ellis McCarthy to UCLA.
This has reduced Cal to having the 49th ranked recruiting class by Scout.com, and to make matters worse they watched all these guys bolt to in-conference rivals.
Baylor
On the surface, the class that Scout ranked as 30th best in the nation is solid. However, we aren't content with judging things on the surface.
This was the year for Baylor to capitalize on their success and build a foundation for lasting glory. They had an amazing season, and the nation's most dynamic player in Robert Griffin III.
This led to them getting an unprecedented amount of press and praise, and yet they could only manage the 30th best class.
24 players have signed a letter of intent with Baylor. Of those 24 only three are ranked by Scout as being four-star players or higher.
This is not the kind of splash Baylor should have made after the season they just turned in.
Kansas State
Let's hope that Kansas State fans enjoyed their wildly successful 2011 season, because that is as good as it is going to get for a while.
The Wildcats laid a huge dud this recruiting season. They have just 16 recruits that have signed a letter of intent, and not one of those guys is rated by Scout as being a four or five-star prospect.
In fact, only five of those players are even ranked as high as a three-star.
This is a thin and not very talented class.
