English Premier League: Power Ranking Each Club for Their January Transfers

Joe TanseyFeb 1, 2012

The January transfer window has finally closed and it is now time to look back and judge each of the 20 Premier League clubs on how they did in the transfer window.

The biggest storyline throughout January was the Carlos Tevez saga but he took a back seat to all of the wheelings and dealings on Monday and Tuesday.

As we have come accustomed to now, Tottenham started doing business an hour before the window closed and did a fare share of dealing, including some failed bids for Loic Remy and Milos Krasic.

The other big clubs failed to do much as it was the mid table clubs that made the most noise at the end of the window.

Here are the top-20 rankings based solely on the performance of the club in the transfer window, along with their team needs going into the window, being brought into account as well.

20. Norwich City

1 of 20

Paul Lambert's Norwich City were the quietest club in January with only one significant  move being made.

Jonathan Howson was brought in from Leeds United and there was some speculation that Grant Holt would leave for the Rangers, but that rumor had no legs.

19. Liverpool

2 of 20

Liverpool fans must be upset that no improvement was made to their club during January.

One year ago, the Reds new ownership spent money like it was no big deal bringing in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll and letting Fernando Torres go to Chelsea.

Since the Carroll move was such a failure, maybe Liverpool's ownership learned their lesson not to spend out of desperation this time around.

18. Wigan Athletic

3 of 20

For a club that needed some type of improvement, Wigan failed to have an impact in the transfer window.

The only player brought in by manager Roberto Martinez was Jean Beausejour, who joined from Birmingham.

Wigan lost out on earning some money off of failing to sell Hugo Rodallega, who did not end up leaving the club, although he most certainly will in the summer with his contract being up.

17. Stoke City

4 of 20

Stoke City reverted back to their normal quiet state during the transfer window after making noise during the summer.

The Potters did not bring in anyone, but they did send Danny Higginbotham and Tom Soares out on loan and sold Danny Pugh to Leeds United.

16. Aston Villa

5 of 20

Aston Villa made some noise at the beginning of the month as they brought in Robbie Keane on a two month loan from the LA Galaxy.

The Villains loaned out Fabian Delph to Leeds United yet again, and also let Nathan Delfouneso exit, as he signed with Leicester City.

15. Arsenal

6 of 20

Arsenal fans kept waiting for Arsene Wenger to make a big move towards the end of the transfer window, but the window came and went with no new signings except for Thomas Eisfeld from Borussia Dortmund.

Thierry Henry was also brought in on a two month loan from the New York Red Bulls but he will not have a huge impact on the club unless he becomes a super sub in the next month for the Gunners.

This season has not been the best for Wenger as a manager, and if the Gunners fail to make the top four, one can only wonder if a move in January would have benefitted the club.

14. Wolverhampton

7 of 20

For a team struggling to hold their place in the Premier League yet again this season, Wolves made two moves that would bolster their squad just enough.

Emmanuel Frimpong joined the club on loan from Arsenal at the beginning of the month.

The Wolves also acquired Sebastien Bassong on loan from Tottenham late on Tuesday.

Mick McCarthy did send two players out on loan with Sam Vokes going to Brighton and Adlene Guediora sent off to Nottingham Forest.

13. Manchester City

8 of 20

When the calendar turned to 2012, Manchester City were expected to get rid of Carlos Tevez and fund a move for Daniele De Rossi from Roma.

Neither of those moves happened.

No club wanted Tevez, even on a loan move, and De Rossi rejected a move.

But, City did get one player from Roma, as David Pizarro was brought in on loan from the Serie A club.

City did see their surplus of defenders dwindle with Nedum Onuoha signing with QPR and Wayne Bridge going on loan to Sunderland.

12. Manchester United

9 of 20

Manchester United did a bit more business than their rivals but it was mostly with players going out from Old Trafford.

Wantaway midfielder Ravel Morrison went to West Ham, Darron Gibson moved to Everton, Mame Biram Diouf transferred to Hannover and Federico Macheda was loaned out to QPR.

Sir Alex Ferguson was able to bring a club legend out of retirement as Paul Scholes rejoined the club to add depth to injury plagued roster.

11. Blackburn Rovers

10 of 20

Blackburn added two players to add to their roster to help in their battle against relegation.

Veteran defender Bradley Orr was brought in from QPR as well as Marcus Olsson, twin brother of Rovers' player Martin Olsson, from Sweden.

Steve Kean's club may have lost Jason Roberts and Keith Andrews to Reading and West Brom respectively but those moves will not hurt the club in any way.

The real win for Blackburn in this transfer window is that they are keeping Chris Samba and Junior Hoilett at least until the summer before other clubs come calling again.

10. Sunderland

11 of 20

Sunderland bolstered their defensive presence in January with two loan signings with Premier League experience.

Wayne Bridge was rescued from the bench of Manchester City and brought into the Stadium of Light.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who spent time at Liverpool, came over from German club Wolfsburg on loan.

It is likely that manager Martin O'Neill will be spending a lot this summer, barring a clash with the owner that does not make him quit the club two days before the season again.

9. West Brom

12 of 20

West Brom were another mid-table club that brought in role players to add depth to the squad.

Keith Andrews was brought in from Blackburn while Liam Ridgewell returned to the Premier League after joining the Baggies from Birmingham.

Not many moves were expected from Roy Hodgson's club, and faint rumors about Peter Odemwingie leaving the club were in fact just faint, as his name appeared in the papers for only a day or two.

8. Fulham

13 of 20

Fulham lit up the rumor mill late in the transfer window, with rumors swirling about their forwards.

In the end, Martin Jol's club brought in one forward and let one leave.

Pavel Pogrebynak was brought in from Stuttgart and has given Google more traffic from soccer writers who look up how to spell the Russian's name, including myself.

Originally, Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson were to leave Craven Cottage but Zamora was the only one to leave as he joined QPR on Tuesday.

7. Newcastle United

14 of 20

Newcastle only made one move during the transfer window but it is a very impactful signing.

The Magpies improved their attack by adding Papiss Demba Cisse from Freiburg in Germany.

The Senegal international will now get a chance to play alongside fellow countrymen, Demba Ba up front after the two return from Senegal's disappointing run in the African Cup of Nations.

6. Chelsea

15 of 20

Chelsea were active in the transfer window unlike both Manchester clubs and rivals Arsenal.

The youth movement at Stamford Bridge continued as Kevin De Bruyne signed with the club from Racing Genk, but was sent on loan back to the Belgian club for the rest of the season.

De Bruyne's signing is a move for the future, while the signature of Gary Cahill is a move for the present, as the Englishman signed from Bolton.

Older players Alex and Nicolas Anelka were let go, while Josh McEachran and Gael Kakuta were sent out on loan to get more playing time.

5. Bolton Wanderers

16 of 20

Bolton were very creative with the money they got from Chelsea in the Cahill deal.

Manager Owen Coyle looked to Major League Soccer and the English Championship to find two players that would the club in their relegation battle.

Defender Tim Ream came to the club from New York Red Bulls and forward Marvin Sordell was brought in from Watford.

The Trotters also were able to get Ryo Miyaichi on loan from Arsenal.

4. Swansea City

17 of 20

You may not think two loan moves would be so significant to land Swansea at number four on this list, but when look deeper you will realize why.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was brought in from Bundesliga club Hoffenheim on loan, and has immediately made an impact on the club's set pieces.

Josh McEachran was also another excellent loan signing by Brendan Rodgers, as the young Chelsea player looks to gain experience in his time playing at Liberty Stadium.

3. Tottenham

18 of 20

It has come to be a formality that in the last hour of the transfer window Tottenham decides to make a big splash.

This time, the Spurs were unable to make a huge splash with a big name like Loic Remy or Milos Krasic, but they were able to bring in Louis Saha and Ryan Nelsen as well as dumping some unhappy players off the roster.

Vedran Corluka, Steven Pienaar and Sebastien Bassong were all sent out on loan while Roman Pavlyuchenko was sold to Lokomotiv Moscow, a move which funded the Saha deal.

2. Queens Park Rangers

19 of 20

QPR were yet again one of the clubs making moves left and right at the end of transfer window.

With a new manager, Mark Hughes, and money from owner Tony Fernandes, QPR mirrored their August last-day spending with moves for Nedum Onuoha, Djibril Cisse and Bobby Zamora on the last day of January.

Also coming into the club on loans are Federico Macheda, Taye Taiwo and Samba Diakite.

The additions made by Hughes should bring enough quality and energy into the club to avoid relegation, if not we could see a good amount of players leaving the club this coming summer.

1. Everton

20 of 20

Rarely in David Moyes' time as manager of Everton have the Toffees been at the front and center of transfer activity, but this January they were.

Starting with bringing back Landon Donovan on loan from LA Galaxy and ending with securing the signature of Nikica Jelavic from the Rangers, Everton had the best in January of all the Premier League clubs.

Donovan has had a huge impact in the attack already and Jelavic will look to add that extra boost to the club's scoring efforts.

Also coming into the club were Darron Gibson from Manchester United, who provides experience in the midfield along with former Toffee Steven Pienaar, who rejoins the club on loan from Tottenham.

The club did lose Louis Saha to Tottenham and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov to Spartak Moscow, but they would prove to be beneficial as the two moves helped Moyes bring in Jelavic and Pienaar.
