Deontay Greenberry: Four-Star Wideout Snubs Notre Dame for Houston
Notre Dame was on the positive side of one of the bigger stunners of the recruiting process this year when they landed Gunner Kiel. Unfortunately, they're now on the negative side and just lost what would have been one of his top weapons.
According to KSEE 24 in Fresno, California, longtime Notre Dame commit Deontay Greenberry has signed with Houston:
The consensus four-star wide receiver was expected to join his cousin, early enrollee Tee Shepard, in South Bend this fall. The move is a huge blow to an Irish class that was looking for a top 10 ranking.
Irish Illustrated said they spoke with Shepard's father and he confirmed that his nephew was intending to sign with the Cougars. That news is now official.
Notre Dame had cornerback Ronald Darby decommit about a week before Kiel signed on, and now the loss of Greenberry really damages what they were trying to do at the skill positions.
The Irish were reportedly near flipping Florida commit Brian Poole, but he signed his letter of intent for the Gators this morning.
Greenberry, 6'2", 185 pounds, was one of the two four-star receivers the Irish earned commitments from along with Justin Ferguson.
Now Brian Kelly has to hope a some kind of miracle happens with wide receiver Nelson Algohor. Unfortunately, many expect him to sign with the rival Trojans of USC.
But as we see here, surprises can happen when the clock ticks down.
Highly-touted athlete Davonte Neal, who won't sign today, is also still an option for this program.
Silence meant good news in South Bend today, and unfortunately the biggest surprise they've been hit with is one one of their biggest fears coming true.
