College Football Recruiting Rankings 2012: Overlooked Teams Making Statements

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

National Signing Day is changing the landscape of college football in many ways. We know about the powerhouse teams like Alabama, but there are plenty of programs flying under the radar this year.

Remember, the best way to win a National Championship is to have a lot of depth as well as high-impact talent. Certain programs are always going to get both, as that is the nature of college athletics in this day and age.

Teams that aren't usually dominant, in either recruiting or on the field, are having a lot of success on the recruiting trail this year.

Here are some teams that are not getting enough credit for their success this National Signing Day.

Texas A&M Aggies

The Aggies are going to be overshadowed by their new/old rival Missouri thanks to Dorial Green-Beckham, but they are having a fantastic recruiting season, and have set themselves up for immediate success in the SEC.

Five-star running back Trey Williams is the class of this group, but there is a lot of impact and depth with 11 four-star players and seven three-star recruits.

New head coach Kevin Sumlin has done a great job convincing Mike Sherman's recruits to stay, and he is getting quality and quantity on his own.

Tennessee Volunteers

It has been awhile since the Volunteers have been relevant, but head coach Derek Dooley is doing his best to bring this program back to prominence in the SEC.

The incoming class is very good, though it lacks that one elite prospect that will put them over the top. Their best recruit is LaDarrell McNeil, a big, physical safety who will wreak havoc on opposing receivers for the next three years.

Dooley still has his work cut out for him in order to get this program back in the BCS picture, but he has had two good recruiting classes in his two seasons at the helm. If he can start turning them into results on the field, he will be an icon in Knoxville.

UCLA Bruins

It should not be hard to put together a great team at UCLA. The school is located in a prime spot, playing all of its home games in the Rose Bowl.

New head coach Jim Mora Jr. is doing his best to bring back swagger and attitude to Los Angeles. The program has done some nice things this recruiting season, including recruiting athlete Devin Fuller and quarterback T.J. Millweard.

This class is more about depth than immediate impact, but the Bruins need to start building a solid foundation before they can compete with Oregon, USC and even Stanford in the Pac-12. Mora has this team on the right track.
